The Supporting Providers of English Language Learning Act expands existing federal student loan forgiveness programs to include teachers of English learners and bilingual or dual language immersion teachers. Under current law, teachers of mathematics, science, and special education can have portions of their federal student loans forgiven after five years of service in low-income schools; this bill adds English language education teachers to that same program. To qualify, teachers must be certified by their school's chief administrator as having appropriate training and demonstrated knowledge in teaching English learners or dual language students. The bill takes effect immediately upon enactment and applies to all teachers who become eligible for loan forgiveness going forward, though it does not specify new federal funding amounts for the existing loan forgiveness program.
