This bill establishes the Calumet National Heritage Area as an official component of the National Heritage Area System, spanning parts of Indiana and Illinois around Lake Michigan. The region is recognized for its exceptional historical, cultural, and natural significance—including its role as the world's largest industrial district in the early 20th century, current status as America's leading steel-producing region, and importance as a center of working-class and immigrant cultures. The heritage area encompasses major sites like Indiana Dunes National Park, Pullman National Historical Park, and thousands of acres of protected land and ecological restoration efforts. The Calumet Heritage Partnership will serve as the local coordinating entity responsible for submitting a management plan to the Secretary of the Interior within three years, and the federal government will provide assistance for up to 15 years after the bill's enactment to support preservation and promotion of the region's resources.
