This bill requires major car manufacturers to produce and sell vehicles equipped with drunk and impaired driving prevention technology. Starting within 180 days of the law's passage, any manufacturer that sold more than 250,000 vehicles in the previous year must manufacture at least 10,000 passenger vehicles annually that meet either the DADSS (Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety) standards or European safety assessment criteria for impairment detection. The bill automatically updates its requirements to match any new European safety standards unless the Secretary of Transportation determines the updated standards don't adequately protect safety. The mandate expires once the federal government issues its own final impaired driving safety rule under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Manufacturers that fail to comply face civil penalties under existing motor vehicle safety laws.
