Referred to the Committee on Foreign Affairs, and in addition to the Committees on the Judiciary, and Financial Services, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
The El Salvador Accountability Act of 2025 would impose sanctions on President Nayib Bukele and other Salvadoran government officials over alleged human rights violations and corruption. The bill requires the President to block assets, revoke visas, and restrict U.S. financial services for approximately thirteen named officials plus any others credibly documented as committing human rights abuses or depriving Salvadoran migrants of constitutional rights. The legislation also directs the U.S. Treasury to oppose international loans to El Salvador and requires the State Department to report within 90 days on the government's use of cryptocurrency for corruption and sanctions evasion. Sanctions would remain in place for a minimum of four years and can only be lifted if the President certifies that the El Salvador government has ceased human rights violations and is complying with international law, with automatic reinstatement if violations resume.
