The BRIDGE Act establishes a new federal grant program to help commuter rail operators pay for maintaining, repairing, and replacing bridges used in their rail systems. The program will award competitive grants to public transportation agencies nationwide, with preference given to systems with older bridges in poor condition, smaller transit systems with limited funding, and projects already identified as priorities by the applicant. The law authorizes $1.5 billion per year from 2027 through 2031 for these grants, which will cover capital costs associated with commuter rail bridge projects, including bridges that also serve intercity rail, other transit, or regular vehicle traffic. The transportation secretary will be required to open applications for grants within 30 days of funding becoming available each year and make award decisions within 75 days.
