The Emergency Medical Services Reimbursement for On-Scene and Support Act would expand Medicare coverage to include ambulance services that don't involve transporting patients. Currently, Medicare only pays for ambulance services when they include actual transportation, but this bill would allow payment for on-scene emergency medical services and support activities provided by ambulance crews even when no transport occurs. The legislation would affect Medicare beneficiaries who receive these services and ambulance service providers across the country. The bill would take effect on January 1, 2026, and would reimburse providers at rates comparable to what they receive for transport services. This change aims to ensure that emergency medical responders are compensated for time spent treating patients at the scene, even when hospital transport isn't necessary.
