This bill strengthens federal law requiring state and local governments to share immigration-related information with federal authorities. It prohibits state and local jurisdictions from enacting policies that delay, restrict, or penalize the sharing of immigration status information with the Department of Homeland Security and prevents them from requiring approval procedures that slow down such information exchanges. The bill specifically requires states and localities to notify federal immigration authorities at least 48 hours before releasing individuals from custody and, in some cases, to hold individuals for up to 48 hours to allow federal authorities to assume custody. It also grants law enforcement officers immunity from personal lawsuits when they comply with these information-sharing requirements. The bill empowers the Attorney General to enforce compliance through federal court actions and allows the government to revoke federal law enforcement grants from jurisdictions found to knowingly violate these information-sharing requirements.
