The law requires students suspected of having concussions to be immediately removed from athletic activities and prohibits their return until a health care professional provides written clearance. Schools must also support academic recovery by providing accommodations such as cognitive rest periods and gradual reintroduction of coursework. States that fail to comply face federal funding reductions of 5 percent initially and 10 percent in subsequent years.
