S. 793
S. 793 strengthens the Department of Veterans Affairs' suicide prevention grant program by increasing the maximum grant amount from $750,000 to $1,250,000 per award and extending the program through September 30, 2028. The bill also reauthorizes $285 million in funding for fiscal years 2026 through 2028, up from the previous $174 million authorization for 2021-2025, and requires the VA Secretary to establish additional performance measures to track program effectiveness and ensure accountability to Congress. Additionally, the bill mandates that VA medical centers within 100 miles of grant recipients receive annual briefings to improve coordination and communication between the VA and suicide prevention grantees. These changes affect veterans and organizations that receive grants to develop suicide prevention initiatives, as well as the VA medical centers that coordinate with these programs.
