Referred to the Committee on Energy and Commerce, and in addition to the Committee on Education and Workforce, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
The Child Suicide Prevention Act establishes two federal grant programs to reduce suicide rates among people under age 26. The first program provides $20 million from 2027 through 2030 to states, hospitals, nonprofits, and other entities to train healthcare providers in suicide prevention techniques, including identifying high-risk youth, discussing firearm safety and secure storage, and recognizing warning signs—with up to 15 percent of funds available to distribute gun storage devices at reduced or no cost. The second program allocates $10 million over the same period to medical schools, nursing schools, and other health profession training programs to develop and integrate suicide prevention curricula. Both programs require annual reporting through 2029, and the bill directs the Department of Health and Human Services to create a website with best practices for suicide prevention and work with healthcare providers, schools, nonprofits, and other stakeholders to implement these evidence-based approaches.
