Referred to the Committee on House Administration, and in addition to the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
The Money Where Our Mouths Are Act would prohibit members of Congress from receiving their regular salary during any government shutdown. Specifically, each day a shutdown occurs, lawmakers in both the House and Senate would lose one day's worth of pay from their annual salary, calculated proportionally for however long the shutdown lasts. The bill applies to all members of Congress and would take effect starting with the 120th Congress (2027 onwards). A government shutdown is defined as any lapse in appropriations caused by Congress failing to pass a regular budget or continuing resolution. The Treasury Department would assist the payroll administrators in both chambers with implementing these pay deductions.
