The Honor Our Commitment Act of 2026 would prevent the removal and detention of Vietnamese nationals who entered the United States before July 12, 1995, and have lived here continuously since then, even if they have final removal orders. The bill affects thousands of Vietnamese immigrants, many of whom are longtime residents with deep community ties. These individuals would also be granted work authorization, allowing them to legally seek employment. The only exceptions to this protection are for individuals deemed security threats by the Department of Homeland Security or those subject to extradition. Within 60 days of the law's passage, DHS must notify all affected Vietnamese nationals about their new protections and provide instructions for reopening their removal cases if desired.
