The Locating Our Unclaimed Veterans Act directs the Department of Veterans Affairs to establish a centralized database to track and identify unclaimed remains of veterans. The system will store information collected from coroners, state governments, and funeral homes, including identifying details such as names, fingerprints, estimated age at death, and other relevant identifiers. The VA will work with the Social Security Administration, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Department of Defense through data-sharing agreements to help identify whether unclaimed remains belong to veterans and locate their families. The Secretary of Veterans Affairs must submit annual reports for three years detailing the system's implementation, outreach efforts, and the number of unclaimed veteran remains successfully identified. The law is set to expire three fiscal years after enactment.
