The Protect Our Probationary Employees Act allows federal employees who were involuntarily fired while still in their probationary period (a trial employment phase) to resume that period if they are rehired by their former agency. Under normal circumstances, employees fired during probation must start a new full probationary period from scratch; this bill instead credits the time they already served, so they only have to complete the remaining portion. The law applies specifically to employees involuntarily separated between January 20, 2025, and the date the bill becomes law, and only if they are rehired in the same or substantially similar position at their former federal agency. The bill expires on January 20, 2029, meaning the protections are temporary and will automatically end after about four years.
