Marcus's Law requires school districts that receive federal funding to mandate that students in grades 9 through 12 undergo an electrocardiogram and echocardiogram before participating in their first athletic competition, beginning in the 2026-2027 school year. The screenings must be completed anytime during the student's ninth-grade year up until they compete in their first athletic event. School districts must partner with public or private entities to offer these medical screenings at a cost of no more than twenty dollars per student, with the partnership in place by the start of the first sports season after the bill's enactment. The law includes exemptions for students whose families have religious objections to the screening or whose physicians document medical reasons they should not undergo testing. If a school district cannot secure a partnership meeting the cost requirement, it may request a waiver from the Secretary of Education and must attempt to establish a qualifying partnership the following sports season.
