Referred to the Committee on Education and Workforce, and in addition to the Committees on Financial Services, Natural Resources, and Oversight and Government Reform, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
The Less Bureaucracy, Better K-12 Education Act would transfer 25 major elementary and secondary education programs from the Department of Education to the Department of Labor. These programs cover a wide range of initiatives including Title I grants for disadvantaged students, teacher quality programs, English language acquisition support, charter schools, community learning centers, and programs serving homeless children and rural schools. The bill would move all related personnel, assets, contracts, and unspent funds to the Labor Department, though the Office of Management and Budget must ensure the transfer does not increase the total number of federal employees. The legislation would take effect six months after enactment, though some transition activities could begin immediately, and all existing grants, contracts, regulations, and legal proceedings would remain valid under the new agency structure.
