Jerry Carl has raised a reported $1.44 million in Alabama's open 1st Congressional District race, compared with $184,000 for Democratic opponent Clyde Jones. That gives Carl a nearly 8-to-1 fundraising advantage in a race rated Solid Republican.

The cash gap is even wider. As of Sept. 30, Carl reported $345,000 in cash on hand and $255,000 in debt, while Jones reported $20,000 in cash and no debt. Carl defeated Rhett Marques in the May 19 Republican primary by approximately 9 percentage points.

The candidates' reported donor profiles differ significantly. Company presidents contributed $60,000 to Carl, followed by business owners ($45,000), CEOs ($42,000), and homemakers ($24,000). These categories suggest substantial support from business executives and owners.

Company presidents alone contributed more than four times the $13,000 attributed to Jones' four leading occupational categories combined. For Jones, developers, managers and chief information officers, and musicians, writers and producers each contributed $3,500, followed by vascular surgeons at $2,500. His leading occupational categories span development, management, technology, the arts, and medicine.

Donors identified as not employed or retired accounted for 14% of Carl's itemized individual contributions ($80,000), compared with 45% of Jones' ($18,000). Contributions from other committees accounted for a reported 32% of Carl's receipts, compared with 1% of Jones'.

These categories suggest substantial support from business executives and owners. Company presidents alone contributed more than four times the $13,000 attributed to Jones' four leading occupational categories combined.

Outside groups have reportedly spent $638,000 in Alabama's 1st District race, with most of that spending supporting the Republican candidate. Those expenditures are separate from candidate fundraising totals. Although fundraising alone does not determine election outcomes, Jones entered the final stretch with less than 6% of Carl's available campaign cash, leaving him at a substantial financial disadvantage in an already Republican-leaning district.
