The Winner

If you live in Mississippi's 2nd U.S. House District, you will continue to be represented in Congress by Bennie Thompson (D-MS), who won reelection against Republican Ron Eller and independent Bennie Foster, according to the Associated Press. The Associated Press called the race at 8:52 p.m. on Nov. 3, and the general election results remain unofficial pending certification.

Thompson's victory keeps Mississippi's only Democratic-held U.S. House seat in Democratic hands as his party prepares to take control of the House in January. The longtime congressman, who has represented the district since 1993, will return to Washington as Democrats gain the opportunity to lead House committees and pursue oversight of the Trump administration.

The Race

Ron Eller won the March 10 Republican primary with 51.1% of the vote, defeating Kevin Wilson by 544 votes. Cook Political Report rated the seat Solid D, while Inside Elections rated it Solid Democratic and Sabato's Crystal Ball rated it Safe Democratic.

The district includes Bolton, Jackson, Greenville, Greenwood, and Marks, along with numerous counties across western and central Mississippi, according to the U.S. House of Representatives, Office of Congressman Bennie Thompson.

The district has a total population of about 713,100 residents, a median household income of about $44,500, and a median age of about 38.9, according to district geographic data. About 21.6% of adults hold a bachelor's degree or higher; the district's population is about 63.8% Black, 31.4% white, 2.3% Hispanic and 0.5% Asian, with an unemployment rate of about 7.6% and approximately 25.8% of residents living below the poverty line.

What's Next

Thompson is set to begin his next term on Jan. 3, 2027. Thompson said he would seek to chair the House Homeland Security Committee and, if successful, planned to scrutinize federal funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and use subpoena authority to compel testimony from White House border czar Tom Homan and White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, according to POLITICO, which reported his comments on Nov. 4, citing a letter Thompson sent to fellow Democrats seeking their support for the chairmanship.
