The Winner
If you live in Kentucky’s 2nd Congressional District, Rep. Brett Guthrie (R-KY) will represent you for a 10th term. With every county reporting, Guthrie had 145,139 votes to Democrat Megan Wingfield’s 81,112, according to unofficial results from the Kentucky Secretary of State’s office.
That’s about 64% for Guthrie to 36% for Wingfield, a narrower win than in 2024, when he beat Democrat Hank Linderman 73.1% to 26.9%. The result keeps the seat in Republican hands.
The Race
Wingfield won a four-way Democratic primary on May 19 with 40.7% of the vote, beating Linderman, who had lost to Guthrie in each of the four previous elections. Cook Political Report and Inside Elections rated the race Solid Republican, and Sabato’s Crystal Ball rated it Safe Republican, according to Ballotpedia’s race page.
The district takes in 17 whole counties, including Warren, Daviess, Hardin and Bullitt, plus parts of others such as Jefferson County. About 766,000 people live there, and the typical household earns about $67,000 a year. About 24% of adults hold at least a bachelor’s degree.
About 85% of residents are white, about 5% are Black, about 5% are Hispanic and about 2% are Asian. The unemployment rate is about 5%, and about 15% of residents live below the poverty line.
What’s Next
Guthrie’s 10th term begins Jan. 3, 2027, and the results stay unofficial until Kentucky certifies them. Congress first returns for a lame-duck session, the stretch before the new Congress takes over. In September, Guthrie, who chairs the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said he didn’t want to rush the FRONTIER Act, a broad artificial intelligence safety bill, through that session and risk getting it wrong, The Record reported.
