Who's In the Race

The Sun Sentinel Editorial Board endorsed Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) on Oct. 3 in Florida's 20th Congressional District, where she faces Republican Brent Andersen and Independent Party candidate Kedner Maxime in the Tuesday, Nov. 3, general election.

Wasserman Schultz won the Aug. 18 Democratic primary in Florida's 20th District with 30,505 votes, or approximately 45%, defeating four opponents. Andersen won the four-candidate Republican primary with approximately 54%.

Wasserman Schultz has served in Congress since 2005, representing the 25th District before redistricting prompted her run in the 20th. She previously served in both chambers of the Florida Legislature. Andersen founded a Pompano Beach insurance agency and previously served on the Massachusetts Republican State Committee. Maxime, who immigrated from Haiti in 1981, is a tax consultant, pastor, and radio host.

What They Stand For

Wasserman Schultz supports reducing grocery, housing, utility, and health care costs, protecting Social Security and Medicare, defending abortion rights, strengthening public schools, and preventing gun violence.

Andersen advocates federal reinsurance reforms, insurance industry accountability, reduced housing regulations, increased homeownership, law enforcement funding, school security and vocational education.

Maxime supports reducing household expenses, expanding homeownership, securing borders while maintaining a compassionate immigration policy, lowering prescription-drug costs and increasing education funding.

The Money Behind the Race

Republican Brent Andersen reported $63,849 in receipts and $40,623 in cash on hand as of July 29. Maxime reported approximately $18,000 in receipts, $2,500 in cash, and $5,000 in debt through June 30. Reported outside spending totaled approximately $1,513 as of Oct. 8, attributed to DISRUPT's support for unsuccessful Democratic primary candidate Elijah Manley.

Race Outlook: Ratings and Betting Markets

Former Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick won approximately 72% in 2022 and ran unopposed in 2024, before the district's boundaries changed. Republicans won 20 of Florida's 28 House seats in both elections. Donald Trump carried Florida with approximately 56% in 2024.
