The Winner
If you live in Maryland's 8th U.S. House District, you will continue to be represented in Congress by Jamie Raskin (D-MD), who has been declared the winner of the congressional race, according to the Associated Press. The AP called the race on Nov. 3, though general election votes are still being counted and results have not yet been certified, so the final margin remains undetermined.
Raskin's victory keeps Maryland's 8th District in Democratic hands as Democrats prepare to take control of the House in January. Raskin, the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, is positioned to play a prominent role in congressional oversight and legislative investigations if Democrats assume the committee's leadership.
The Race
Republican Cheryl Riley advanced through the June 23 Republican primary, winning 43.25% of the vote in a four-candidate field, according to official Maryland election results. Cook Political Report rated the seat Solid Democratic heading into Election Day; Inside Elections and Sabato's Crystal Ball also rated it Solid Democratic.
Maryland's 8th Congressional District lies almost entirely within Montgomery County, with a small portion extending into Prince George's County. According to geographic data for the district, it has a reported population of about 771,163, a median household income of about $138,349, and a median age of about 41.
About 63.9% of adults hold a bachelor's degree or higher, and the district's population is about 45.9% white, 17.2% Black, 20% Hispanic, and 13.8% Asian, with an unemployment rate of about 4.8% and approximately 7.2% of residents living below the poverty line. The district's Montgomery County boundaries are shown on a Maryland Department of Planning map.
What's Next
Raskin is set to begin his next term on Jan. 3, 2027, when the 120th Congress begins. The seat remains in Democratic hands, and Maryland election officials are continuing to finalize general election results. All 199 election-day precincts have reported, but the results remain unofficial pending certification.
