The Race

Detroit's congressional seat heads to a contested Democratic primary on August 4, with Democratic incumbent Shri Thanedar facing a well-funded progressive challenger in one of the most urban districts in the state. The Republican primary is uncontested. Whoever wins the Democratic contest will be the heavy favorite in November.

Michigan's 13th Congressional District covers Detroit and portions of the surrounding Wayne County area, and it only sends one representative to the U.S. House.

Michigan runs a traditional partisan primary system: Democratic and Republican voters cast ballots in separate party contests to select their nominees. Both primaries fall on the same date, August 4, and the general election follows November 3. The general election ballot will include candidates from multiple parties: Democrats, Republicans, Greens, and independents are all listed, with 11 candidates currently in the general election field.

The Candidates

Shri Thanedar has represented Michigan's 13th Congressional District since January 2023, winning a crowded Democratic primary in the heavily blue, Detroit-anchored district. A chemist and entrepreneur born in India, he immigrated to the United States before building a career in business. In the 119th Congress, he sits on the House Committee on Agriculture and the House Committee on Homeland Security.

His tenure has not been without turbulence. Thanedar filed articles of impeachment against President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in 2025, a move that drew sharp criticism from House Democratic leadership, who described him as not a "team player." He ultimately dropped the push to force a floor vote. Despite that friction with leadership, he enters the primary backed by AIPAC and House Democratic leadership, holds endorsements from both the Congressional Progressive Caucus and the center-left New Democrat Coalition, and received the endorsement of the *Detroit News* editorial board.

Donavan McKinney is the primary challenger. Born and raised in Detroit, McKinney has served as a Michigan state representative for the 11th House District since 2023 and holds a B.A. in Public Policy from the University of Michigan. He is running as the anti-establishment candidate, touting his appropriations record in Lansing and positioning himself as a fighter for one of the poorest congressional districts in the country.

McKinney has assembled a broad progressive coalition behind him. His endorsers include Sen. Bernie Sanders, the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), the Working Families Party, Justice Democrats, Rep. Summer Lee (D-Pa.), and members of the Congressional Black Caucus who broke with House leadership to back him.

Three additional Democrats are on the primary ballot: Nazmul Hassan, Shelby Campbell, and Anthony Carbonaro.

The Republican primary, meanwhile, is uncontested, with only Taras Nykoriak on the ballot. A 2026 Michigan Advance voter guide noted that Nykoriak was convicted in 2016 and sentenced to 16 months in federal prison for stealing U.S. savings bonds from a church.

The Money Behind the Race

McKinney has raised more than $1.3 million in total receipts, while Thanedar has raised just over $700,000 in total contributions, according to FEC filings.

Ratings vs. Odds

Cook Political Report, Sabato's Crystal Ball, and Inside Elections all rate Michigan's 13th as solid Democratic, as of July 16, July 16, and June 30, respectively. The consensus rating, last updated July 23, matches: solid Democratic.

Prediction markets back that assessment. Kalshi gives the Democratic nominee a 99% chance of winning the general election as of August 3. The real contest, by every available measure, is the August 4 Democratic primary between Thanedar and McKinney.
