Who's In the Race
Democrat Matt Little faces Republican Eric Pratt in the Nov. 3 general election in Minnesota's 2nd District. The seat is held by Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN), who chose to run for the U.S. Senate rather than seek reelection.
Little has served as mayor of Lakeville, a Minnesota state senator and a Lakeville city council member and his campaign describes him as a Lakeville native. Pratt has served as a Minnesota state senator representing District 54 since 2023 and worked for decades in banking. Because neither candidate is an incumbent in this race, it is one of the more competitive open-seat contests among Minnesota House races this cycle. The Democratic primary was certified after the Aug. 11 vote; Little won it with about 47% of the vote, with Matt Klein as the runner-up. Pratt ran unopposed in the Republican primary on Aug. 11.
What They Stand For
Matt Little has proposed regulating artificial intelligence and data centers, according to his campaign website. He's also supported getting ICE out of Minnesota.
Eric Pratt has proposed lowering costs and supporting small businesses, according to his campaign website. He's also supported strengthening public safety.
The Money Behind the Race
Through July 22, Matt Little had raised about $923,000 and had about $128,000 in cash on hand, while Eric Pratt had raised about $511,000 and had about $254,000 on hand, giving Pratt more cash available to spend despite raising less overall, according to Federal Election Commission filings. Little carried about $131,000 in debt as of that date, an amount that exceeds his cash on hand.
Outside groups had spent about $405,000 supporting Little as of Oct. 14, and 314 Action Fund was the largest single spender in the race at about $2.46 million.
Race Outlook: Ratings and Betting Markets
Cook Political Report rated the race "Likely Democratic" as of Oct. 9; Sabato's Crystal Ball rated it "Likely Democratic" as of Oct. 11; and Inside Elections rated it "Likely Democratic" as of Oct. 2. On Kalshi, traders gave Democrats, whose nominee is Little, a 91.74% chance of winning the seat as of Oct. 14.
The district has backed Democrats in each of the last two cycles: Angie Craig won it with about 51% in 2022 and about 56% in 2024. Statewide, Democrats and Republicans each won four of Minnesota's eight U.S. House seats in both 2022 and 2024. In the 2024 presidential race, Democrat Kamala Harris carried Minnesota with about 51% of the vote.
