The Bill
On July 14, the Senate confirmed Matthew A. Schwartz of New York to be a U.S. Circuit Judge for the Second Circuit, one of the nation's most influential courts. The Senate approved Schwartz's nomination 50 to 45, with all 50 Republicans voting yes and Democrats voting no. The two Independent senators also opposed the nomination. Three senators (two Democrats and one Republican) did not vote.
Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia, who's served since January 2021 and missed 51 votes this Congress, sided with his party and the Democratic caucus, which overwhelmingly opposed the nomination. Schwartz will assume his seat on the Second Circuit bench now that his confirmation is complete.
