Who's In the Race
Incumbent Republican Steve Scalise faces three challengers in Louisiana's 1st Congressional District: Democrat Lauren Jewett and Republican Randall Arrington.
Scalise has represented the district in Congress and previously served in the Louisiana Legislature, according to his official House biography. Jewett describes herself as a National Board Certified special-education teacher, union member, and community leader who represents the 1st Congressional District caucus on the Louisiana Democratic Party Executive Committee, according to her campaign website.
Arrington is a retired naval aviator who served 21 years in the U.S. Navy, including flying jets from aircraft carriers, and a former Department of Homeland Security deputy director, university professor, and author.
What They Stand For
Scalise says he supports securing the southern border and reversing what his official biography calls "pro-amnesty" policies. He says he supports working with federal and state law-enforcement officers to keep communities safe.
Scalise says parents should have a say in their children's education. He says the United States should reduce its reliance on China. Scalise says he supports investigations into the origins of COVID-19. He describes energy exploration and development as important to Louisiana and supports what his biography calls American "energy dominance."
Jewett says her campaign is focused on putting Louisiana families first, arguing that families are being burdened by unaffordable insurance, high health-care costs, underfunded schools, and an economy that leaves people behind, according to her campaign website. She describes herself as an educator and community leader running to put families, teachers, and working people first.
A third-party source reported as of Sept. 10 that no official campaign website or questionnaire response had been found for Arrington; no specific policy position or broad political self-description by Arrington from an official campaign source was verified.
The Money Behind the Race
The race record for Louisiana's 1st Congressional District lists no outside spending total as of Oct. 5. Candidate fundraising across the race totaled $10,780,707, according to the race record.
Race Outlook: Ratings and Betting Markets
Every major race-rating service calls this contest solidly in Republican hands. Cook Political Report rated the race "Solid Republican" as of Sept. 25; Sabato's Crystal Ball gave it the same rating as of Sept. 29; and Inside Elections also rated it "Solid Republican" as of Oct. 2.
On Kalshi, the prediction market gave Republicans a 96.93 percent chance of winning the seat and Democrats a 3.07 percent chance, as of Oct. 5, based on 4,139 contracts traded. Scalise's name is not listed separately in the market odds; the figures reflect the Republican and Democratic nominees collectively.
District-level results for 2022 and 2024 were not available in the sources reviewed. Statewide federal congressional party totals for 2022 and 2024 were not available in the sources reviewed. In the 2024 presidential election, Republican Donald Trump carried Louisiana with 60.22 percent of the vote.
Voters in Louisiana's 1st Congressional District should confirm registration and polling details directly with official election authorities before the Nov. 3 election. The voter-registration deadline, early-voting dates and hours, and Election Day polling hours could not be verified as of Oct. 5, so voters should check with the Louisiana Secretary of State's Elections and Voting office and their parish Registrar of Voters office, which administers early-voting locations, for confirmed details.
