Who's In the Race

Republican Rep. Matt Van Epps and Democrat Darden Copeland won their parties' Aug. 6 primaries for Tennessee's 7th U.S. House District, and the general election is set for Nov. 3. Van Epps drew 60,043 votes and Copeland 16,641.

What They Stand For

On his campaign website, Van Epps identifies as pro-Second Amendment and pro-life, and says he supports securing the border, stopping migrant crime, advancing law and order, growing the economy, cutting taxes and regulations, promoting U.S. manufacturing, and expanding American energy production.

Darden Copeland's campaign site says he would protect Medicaid, defend affordable health-care premiums, lower prescription-drug costs, and keep rural hospitals open.

The Money Behind the Race

Outside groups have spent more than $7 million in this race as of Oct. 2.

Outside groups spent $3,467,891 supporting candidates and $3,572,609 opposing them.

Outside spending totals in the race included MAGA Inc. at $1,690,361, Conservatives for American Excellence Inc. at $1,063,831, HMP at $930,876, Your Community PAC at $766,158, and Club for Growth Action at $472,591.

Race Outlook: Ratings and Betting Markets

Cook Political Report, Sabato's Crystal Ball, and Inside Elections all rate the race "Solid Republican," as of Sept. 25, Sept. 29, and Sept. 17, respectively. On Kalshi, as of Oct. 2, the Republican candidate carried a 91 percent win probability against nine percent for the Democrat.

The district's Republican winner took about 60 percent of the vote in both the 2022 and 2024 general elections. The records list nine winners from the Republican Party and one from the Democratic Party. Republican Donald Trump carried Tennessee in the 2024 presidential election with about 64 percent of the vote.
