About

Archival foundation was created to serve as a supporting organization of the academy foundation. Beginning JULY 1, 2006, the primary purpose of the organization is to operate and manage the douglas fairbanks center for motion picture study (fairbanks center), the margaret herrick library, and the academy FILM archive. The library and FILM archive serve as central sources of information on ALL facets of motion pictures. The fairbanks center houses the margaret herrick library. Founded in 1931, the library's world-renowned NON-circulating reference and research collection is devoted to history and development of the motion picture as an art form and industry. It is one of the most complete collections of FILM-related materials ever assembled. It includes books, pamphlets, periodicals, still photographs, scripts, clippings files, personal and business correspondence, production memoranda, sketches, sheet music, music scores, and scrapbooks. The library is open to the public and is heavily used by scholars, educators, students, members of the entertainment industry and representatives of the press, as well as by academy of motion picture arts and sciences' members. The academy FILM archive focuses on the collection, preservation, documentation and exhibition of films, and on research access to them. Most of the archive's acquisitions are motion picture features and shorts distributed in the u.s. The total collection currently comprises over 240,000 items covering some 109,000 individual titles.
