The Trump Administration and its goons in ICE have spent the last year attacking @RepLaMonica. Now they’re abusing their power to go after Congresswoman @Ilhan. The use of federal law enforcement against a sitting member of Congress on the eve of an election is unprecedented and unacceptable. It is no accident that this raid comes three weeks before an election where Rep. Omar is on the ballot. This is part of the fascist playbook to rile up his supporters in advance of the midterms and it comes just days after he encouraged violence against residents of Minnesota.

Martin Soto, who earlier this year lead a hunger strike to bring attention to the deplorable conditions at Delaney Hall, has finally been released. I met his wife Gabriela who has stood outside Delaney Hall, day after day in the heat and rain, fighting for his freedom. No one should suffer what Martin, Gabriela, and others have endured. Close Delaney Hall. Abolish ICE.

Today is a difficult day for many New Jerseyans as we mark the anniversary of the attack that killed at least 1,200 in Israel. Many had deep ties to the 12th District, including Laor Abramov, who grew up in Hopewell and was killed on October 7th, 2023. Together, lets remember those lost and offer comfort to our grieving neighbors.

Rep. Watson Coleman Announces Update on Case of Amro Sehaim

Today, Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman released a statement regarding the detention of South River resident Amro Saheim: "This weekend, I received the news that after repeated inquiries, letters, and demands for humanitarian release from me and others, Amro Sehaim, a resident and small business owner in South River, was released from ICE detention at Delaney Hall. Before his detention, Mr. Sehaim was undergoing serious medical treatment. His condition had been deteriorating while at Delaney. Mr. Sehaim can now get the medical attention he needs. "Many more detainees find themselves in similar situations. They cannot access the medical care they need and are living in substandard conditions in the for-profit Delaney Hall detention center. The conditions at Delaney and ICE detention facilities across the country are atrocious and bring shame and moral disrepute to the Department of Homeland Security, the Trump Administration, and our nation."

Reps. Watson Coleman, Bynum, Krishnamoorthi Calls For Review Of Epa’S Microplastics Monitoring And Research

Today, Congresswoman Janelle Bynum (D-OR), Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12), and Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) led 21 of their colleagues in a letter requesting Government Accountability Office Comptroller General Brown, to conduct a review of the Environmental Protection Agency’s efforts to monitor and evaluate the risks of human exposure to micro- and nanoplastics. The lawmakers argue that to continue protecting Americans’ health, they need to understand what the EPA has accomplished in its work on microplastics and what progress still needs to be made. They also emphasize the urgency of this review amid emerging research connecting microplastics to adverse health consequences and serious environmental risks. In the letter, the lawmakers write: “Even as the EPA's FY2023-FY2026 research plan approaches its conclusion, Congress lacks a clear assessment of what the EPA has accomplished in its work on microplastics and what work remains necessary to support reliable monitoring, risk assessment and potential regulatory action.” Later, they write: “Addressing microplastic pollution is critical for protecting the health of Americans and safeguarding our waterways and ecosystems. Our constituents deserve to know what microplastic exposure means for their families’ health, and the requested information above will be critical in informing Congress’s work in tackling this challenge."The letter was also signed by Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Representatives Jesús G. "Chuy" García (IL-04), Jared Huffman (CA-02), Dan Goldman (NY-10), Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C), Emanuel Cleaver II (MO-05), Mike Quigley (IL-05), Melanie Stansbury (NM-01), Dave Min (CA-47), Rashida Tlaib (MI-12), Laura Friedman (CA-30), Jasmine Crockett (TX-30), Judy Chu (CA-28), Kevin Mullin (CA-15), Sylvia R. Garcia (TX-29), Adelita S. Grijalva (AZ-07), Steve Cohen (TN-09), Mike Levin (CA-49), Betty McCollum (MN-04), Nanette Diaz Barragán (CA-44), and Zoe Lofgren (CA-18). Researchers at the Environmental Protections Agency (EPA) define microplastics as plastic particles ranging in size from 5 millimeters to one nanometer. Microplastics have been found in every ecosystem on the planet, as well as in food, beverages, and animal and human tissue. When Environment Oregon sampled 30 of Oregon’s most iconic rivers, lakes, and urban waterways, they found microplastic fibers in 100% of the samples. The full text of the letter is available here.

Pete Hegseth has misled the American people on the cost of the war, the conditions of service members at sea, and how much of the military’s resources have been drained. He and the Trump administration have no track record for honesty, but a long record of incompetence. The fact that Hegseth would cover up the number of service members we've lost in Trump's war on Iran is abhorrent, yet unsurprising. It is no secret that this war is a failure. It makes GOP Speaker Johnson’s cancelation of votes to avoid a vote on impeaching Hegseth even more dubious. The American people want accountability and deserve the truth. These are the actions of an authoritarian government, and this is the most shameless collection of individuals we've had lead this country in my lifetime.

Rep. Watson Coleman Condemns Trump Administration Attempts to Hijack N.I.H. Research Grants

Yesterday, theNew York Times reported that White House officials were attempting to make massive cuts to research grants at the National Institutes of Health, conflicting with months of denials from NIH officials. Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12), who sits on theLabor, Health and Human Services and Education subcommittee, released the following statement: Today, we learned that the White House is trying to cancel funding that "does not conform to Trump's political agenda." Over the last year and a half, the NIH director and his sub-directorshave assured my colleagues and me that politics would bekept out of decisions for health research that saves millions of lives in the United States. Last June, I introducedlegislation to insulate vital NIH research grants from Trump's political attacks. As recently as this past Tuesday, NIH Institute directors told members of the Appropriations Committee that grant funding was still on track. Yet today, we get the news that President Trump and OMB Director Vought are moving to cut funding that doesn’t align with their extreme ideology. Funding decisions are supposed to be made by experts based on scientific merit and the likelihood of outcomes that could save lives and reduce suffering. The Trump Administration's public health record has been an abysmal failure. Instead of correcting course, they're doubling down and playing political games with the lives of the American people. Congress MUST reassert its authority over the budget and ensure the government works for the American people regardless of partisan politics.
