This raid against Rep. Omar is an extreme abuse of power and an escalation of a yesrs-long campaign against her. Trump should not be allowed to politicize the federal government against elected officials. I stand with @Ilhan.

ICE has no place in our communities. I’m relieved that the 5 year old child is unharmed, but this cannot continue. The ICE agent must be held accountable, and DHS dismantled.
This is why I opposed expanding Trump’s tariff authority under the pretext of imposing sanctions on purchasers of Russian oil. It was always clear Trump has no interest in holding Putin accountable for his crimes against Ukraine. He only cares about cutting corrupt deals and rewarding his fellow war criminals while our communities suffer.
No one is safe under this lawless DHS. Not even U.S. citizens. We must make sure these masked agents are held accountable and we must dismantle DHS.
HHS's new proposed Head Start rule would make nearly 1 in 10 enrolled kids ineligible and weaken services for dual language learners and kids with disabilities. I’m proud to have joined this letter urging @HHSGov to withdraw it and instead protect Head Start, which supports so many working families.
CHICAGO — Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04), along with Congressmembers Delia Ramirez (IL-03), Rashida Tlaib (MI-12), Summer Lee (PA-12), Ilhan Omar (MN-05), and Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) released a joint statement condemning the Israeli government’s systematic persecution of Palestinian healthcare workers, and called for their immediate release from arbitrary detention. “Over the last three years, the Israeli government has systematically destroyed the health system in Palestine, murdering at least 1,700 Palestinian doctors, nurses, paramedics, and other healthcare workers and destroying dozens of hospitals. It has arrested and arbitrarily detained hundreds of Palestinian healthcare workers, including at least 16 physicians who continue to be held in inhumane conditions. Among them is Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, whom the Israeli government has arbitrarily detained since 2024 and tortured to the point of near-death after previously murdering his son and brutally attacking his hospital,” said the Members. “Israel’s systematic annihilation of medical facilities and healthcare workers is not an accident or unfortunate consequence of war; it is an intentional policy designed to further occupation, apartheid, and genocide against the Palestinian people. We demand the immediate release of Dr. Abu Safiya and all other arbitrarily detained healthcare workers and Palestinian prisoners. And we demand an end to U.S. arms transfers to Israel, including the Trump Administration’s latest $2.8 billion sale of bombs. Congress must block this sale and pass the Block the Bombs Act to finally end our government’s shameful complicity in Israel’s mass atrocities.” Congressman García also recently led a letter condemning the violence by Israeli settlers, police and military in the village of al-Mughayyir in the occupied West Bank, and called for the release of Marwan Barghouti who has been detained and tortured in Israeli prison for over 20 years. # # #

For years, the Israeli government has systematically destroyed the health system in Palestine, murdering at least 1,700 Palestinian doctors, nurses, paramedics, and other healthcare workers and destroying dozens of hospitals. Proud to join my colleagues in demanding the immediate release of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya and all other arbitrarily detained healthcare workers and Palestinian prisoners.
I am disgusted by the racism, Islamophobia, and hatred displayed this past weekend by right wing extremists at an annual Palestinian Festival. Little Palestine is a vibrant community rooted in shared humanity and one that I am proud to represent in Congress. The community will stand strong against these despicable attacks.
Trump and Miller’s DHS almost killed Marimar Martinez, and then lied about what happened and falsely smeared her as a terrorist. Marimar deserves justice. I will continue to stand with her to demand accountability for all the atrocities committed by Border Patrol and ICE agents in Chicago.
I'm fighting to stop the closure of the Chicago National Archives. When I visited the facility, I was able to find a piece of my family's personal history: my father's naturalization records. This is what those archives represent. They hold history for communities, scholars, researchers, and museums. I'm fighting to ensure we protect this history for generations to come.
CHICAGO — Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) led his colleagues Congresswoman Delia Ramirez (IL-03), Congressmen Mike Quigley (IL-05), and Jonathan Jackson (IL-01) in a letter to the U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, condemning the violence by Israeli settlers, police and military in the village of al-Mughayyir in the occupied West Bank. The legislators, who represent several constituents with relatives living in the village, are calling attention to the alarming situation where recently five Palestinian residents under the age of 20 were killed, others including a nine-year old boy have been shot, and food, basic needs and even education have been restricted. “They have destroyed homes, businesses, and farms, uprooted thousands of olive trees, stolen livestock, blocked food and other necessary supplies from entering the village, and devastated the entire local economy,” state the Members of Congress in the letter. “Those residents who are not murdered by Israeli forces are condemned to a horrific existence marked by poverty, deprivation, and terror.” “This is not an isolated situation; it reflects an intentional policy of violence and terrorism inflicted by Israeli forces across the occupied West Bank to further the ethnic cleansing and genocide of the Palestinian people,” continues the letter. “Shamefully, the U.S. government has consistently backed this policy by continuing to provide military aid to Israel and failing to act to stop these rampant attacks. This is morally unconscionable and directly affects the U.S. citizens who live in al-Mughayyir or who (like several of our constituents) have relatives that live there.” The Members urged Ambassador Huckabee to visit al-Mughayyir, hold a town hall with its residents, and specify concrete actions the U.S. government will take to intervene with the Israeli government. “At minimum, the Administration should follow the lead of our allies and impose sanctions and a trade ban on settlements, but much more is required to end our government’s longstanding support of the mass atrocities committed against the Palestinian people,” demand the Members of Congress in the letter. Sending political opponents to prison is what authoritarians do. And it is exactly what the Trump admin wants to do to @RepLaMonica for doing her job and standing up to ICE. But LaMonica has not let it steal her joy, and I want to congratulate her on the arrival of her daughter!
I support the release of Marwan Barghouti. He did not receive a fair trial and has been tortured in Israeli prison for over 20 years. He is a popular and unifying voice for the Palestinian people, and as we push to end Israel's atrocities, his release would help advance freedom and self-determination for Palestine. Marwan — and everyone unjustly detained by Israel — must be released.
Palestinians in al-Mughayyir – including relatives of my constituents – are being killed and condemned to lives of poverty, deprivation, and terror by Israeli settlers, police, and military. Today I led a letter to Ambassador Huckabee urging him to visit the village, meet with residents, and outline what concrete steps the U.S. will take with the Israeli government to stop these atrocities.
CHICAGO — Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) led a letter with 20 members of the U.S. House and Senate to the Archivist of the U.S. Bradford Wilson, expressing strong opposition to the announcement that the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) intends to close the regional archive facility and Federal Records Center (FRC) located in the Congressman’s district since the 1970s, despite the enormous significance of this facility and the records stored therein. In the letter, the legislators urge Mr. Wilson to immediately halt the relocation, provide Congress with necessary information about the agency’s plans, and reverse this decision to move the more than 140,000 cubic feet of historical records. The collection stored at this facility includes records related to Abraham Lincoln, Etta James, Fred Hampton, Chicago and Regional History, African American History, the Civil Rights Movement, Native Americans, Immigration and Naturalization, the U.S. Supreme Court, and much more. “This hasty, ill-conceived move would have profoundly harmful consequences. It could restrict access to vital records, including for federal agencies that routinely access them to carry out their mission. It would irreversibly damage staff expertise that has been built for decades around this facility and is inseparable from the collections themselves. It could even damage the records themselves, including the expansive microfilm publications stored there,” state the Members in the letter. “People from across our region and nation visit the facility for many reasons: obtaining census and naturalization records to prove citizenship status, finding information about Great Lakes vessels on which they served, examining genealogy records to identify their ancestors, studying major historical events like the 1894 Pullman Strike and Nuremberg War Crime Trials, and much more,” they added. “The work of agencies, museums, scholars, teachers, and the public continues to depend on access to these records, which are vital to our history and NARA’s mission.” The Organization of American Historians, Council of State Archivists, National Association of Government Archives and Records Administrators, Society of American Archivists, Chicago Area Archivists, Illinois State Historical Society, and others have also expressed alarm over the closure of multiple NARA facilities and the lack of planning and consultation with local stakeholders. Congressman García has been leading oversight efforts related to NARA’s facility closures, including by co-leading legislation to prohibit NARA from unilaterally closing its archival facilities. Cosigners of the letter include: Senators Richard Durbin (IL) and Tammy Duckworth (IL), and Representatives Shontel Brown (OH-11), Sean Casten (IL-06), Danny Davis (IL-07), Debbie Dingell (MI-06), Bill Foster (IL-11), Jonathan Jackson (IL-01), Marcy Kaptur (OH-09), Robin Kelly (IL-02), Kristen McDonald Rivet (MI-08), Gwen Moore (WI-04), Kevin Mullin (CA-15), Mark Pocan (WI-02), Mike Quigley (IL-05), Delia Ramirez (IL-03), Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), Shri Thanedar (MI-13), Rashida Tlaib (MI-12), and Lauren Underwood (IL-14). The MAGA Supreme Court is letting Trump continue third country deportations, for now. Trump and Miller are sending people to countries they don’t belong to, where grave human rights violations happen, to be tortured and in some cases killed. This cruelty and injustice must end.

Today I led a bicameral letter with 20 of my colleagues urging NARA to halt its plan to close and relocate its Chicago facility. These vital records are how families, researchers, and entire communities learn more about their history, and moving them out of reach puts that access at risk.
As election day approaches, it's crucial we raise awareness about what federal law says about protecting our vote. That's why Congresswoman Ramirez and I sat down with community groups, local government and election officials to hear what it takes to keep our elections running smoothly. Let's be very clear: deploying ICE or any armed federal enforcement officers to polling places violates the law. So does voter intimidation, coercion, or any attempt to interfere with the right to vote. So while Trump and his anti-democracy allies in Congress work to undermine confidence in our elections, Congresswoman Ramirez and I will fight just as hard to defend them.
Chicago, IL — Today, Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) and Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez (IL-03) hosted an election security and polling location safety roundtable with public officials, government agencies, community stakeholders, and other partners to discuss preparedness and coordination efforts to keep polling locations safe, secure, accessible, and free from intimidation or disruption. The roundtable comes after months of constant threats of the presence of armed federal officials at polling locations made by the Trump administration and the recently released plan for Election Infrastructure Security by the Department of Homeland Security. Just today, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Trump administration’s SAVE program, a flawed voters database that removes eligible voters from the rolls. “In the face of an authoritarian attack on our democracy, it is up to an intergovernmental coalition to protect our elections and ensure every person’s vote is counted and represented. It is up to us to roll up our sleeves and step into the work of cooperation, organizing, and solidarity to protect our democracy,” said Congresswoman Ramirez. “Our message is clear: We will not be bullied, we will not be intimidated, and we will not let our constituents be dissuaded from exercising their constitutional rights.” The members of Congress and organizations reminded constituents that: “We know this administration has consistently abused power, attacking our most basic civil rights and liberties. The ACLU has been there at every turn to push back to make sure that Illinoisans are protected and supported. Access to the ballot is no different. The Trump Administration is attempting to limit access to voting, and the ACLU is working in Illinois and across the country to empower and educate voters about their rights, to protect voting from federal interference, and to continue to show up for all Illinoisans. And, at the same time, we are making it clear to communities that their vote continues the work of standing up for our neighbors and for democracy. Each of us must vote in this election – vote for the policies we want, vote for the changes we need, and vote like our rights depend on it. Because they do,” said ACLU, Aisha N Davis. “All eligible citizens have the right to vote, and at ICIRR we’ve long made it our mission to educate, get out the vote AND protect the rights of all voters at the polling place,” said Bassem Kawar, Sr. Director of Political Department. “Here at ICIRR, we are committed to working with our longstanding partners, many of whom are here with us today and others, to ensure the rights of all voters are respected and upheld on Election Day. We encourage people to visit the 866OURVOTE.org website or call 1-866-OUR-VOTE in advance of early voting and getting in touch with trusted election experts.” “Election security is built into every part of our process, from our voting equipment to our well-trained Election Judges and our coordination with law enforcement and community partners,” said Cook County Clerk Monica Gordon. “Our job is to make sure every polling place is a safe and protected civic space where voters can cast their ballots without fear or intimidation, and we will be ready to deliver a secure election.” For the Homeland Security Committee one-pager on the legality of deploying ICE agents to polling locations, CLICK HERE. The claim that non-citizens are voting in federal elections in large numbers is false – and Trump knows it. But now, because of the right-wing Supreme Court, many Americans, especially naturalized citizens, are at risk of being denied their right to vote over unreliable data. This is another Trump hoax to interfere with the right to vote. Make a plan to vote, and make sure you know your rights. We will not allow Trump's attempts to sow fear about our elections succeed.
As Trump’s imperialistic efforts to interfere in elections throughout Latin America continue, I led a letter with @repdeliaramirez, @RepJayapal and 28 other Members of Congress opposing the Administration’s coordinated effort to threaten our strategic alliance with Brazil and to undermine its upcoming presidential elections. Trump wants to undermine elections not only in the US but anywhere he can put his dirty hands on.
This is why we need to pass my bill, the Connecting Youth to Jobs Act, which would bring resources, including jobs, to our youth, especially those in underserved communities. Our kids are asking for it. It's past time we deliver.
