Sacramento families should be able to fly with confidence knowing lifesaving medication is available in an emergency. As Co-Chair of the Congressional Food Allergy Research Caucus, I joined @SenDuckworth in urging the FAA to keep epinephrine on every flight. For people with severe allergies, minutes matter, and passenger safety has to come first.

So happy to celebrate my dear friend Shonna McDaniels at the ONYX Awards. For 30 years, Shonna has led the @SojoArts, preserving and sharing the history and culture of Sacramento’s Black community. Generations of local artists and students have found a home there. Congratulations to all of this year’s honorees, many of them dear friends as well. Our region is stronger because of their leadership. Thank you to The Observer for lifting up the remarkable Black leaders who make Sacramento great.

Congress must act on regulating AI — now. That’s why I’ve been working with my colleagues to introduce legislation that protects our national security, our jobs, and our children. We can lead on AI innovation while putting the safeguards in place to keep Americans safe. https://t.co/4Jm4FEcf3H

Getting around Sacramento should be easier, cleaner, and more reliable. That’s why I’ve delivered more than $460 million in federal funding for public transit across our region. I’ve helped bring the Dos Rios light rail station to life, extend light rail to Cosumnes River College, put new low-floor light rail cars and zero-emission buses on our streets, and invest in SacRT’s McClellan facility. I’ve also secured funding for the Capitol Corridor Sacramento-to-Roseville Third Track Project and SACOG’s Green Means Go program. These are investments in our neighborhoods, our commutes, and a better-connected Sacramento.

AI is changing quickly, and our responsibility to protect kids must keep up. I introduced the bipartisan Protecting Kids from Human-Like Chatbots Act with @Rep_Whitesides to establish safeguards for children interacting with AI designed to act and speak like real people. When kids can’t tell where technology ends and a real relationship begins, the stakes are too high to wait. Congress must act now to keep them safe.

I am proud to recognize Gilbert Tafoya as our Veteran of the Month! Gilbert has dedicated his life to service—first to our nation, and now to Sacramento’s veterans. Through his leadership with DAV Sacramento Chapter 6, he has fought tirelessly for those who rely on the chapter’s support and community. Today, that means fighting to restore Chapter 6’s charter and protect a century-old Sacramento institution. Congratulations, Gilbert, and thank you for your continued service!

I was proud to secure $1.05 million in congressional funding for Food Literacy Center in FY2023 to support a student farm and garden and expand nutrition education for students at Leataata Floyd Elementary School. Today, this investment is delivering meaningful progress for Sacramento students and families. Through hands-on garden, cooking, and nutrition education, students are learning where food comes from, how to prepare healthy meals, and how nutritious choices can support lifelong health. Food insecurity remains a serious challenge for too many families. By connecting students with fresh food and practical food-literacy skills, this project is helping build a healthier, more food-secure Sacramento. Thank you to Food Literacy Center, Leataata Floyd Elementary School, and the community partners bringing this vision to life.

On VFW Day, we honor the generations of veterans who have called Sacramento home and continued serving long after taking off the uniform. Our local VFW members embody Sacramento’s commitment to service, community, and looking out for one another. I’m proud to stand with them and all our veterans today and every day.

It was wonderful to join the Elk Grove Food Bank for Harvest of Hope and celebrate the incredible work they do to serve families throughout our community. For decades, the Elk Grove Food Bank has been there for our neighbors, providing nutritious food and critical resources to people facing food insecurity while treating every person who walks through their doors with dignity and compassion. I’m proud to stand with the Elk Grove Food Bank and everyone working to make sure no family in our community goes hungry.

It was an honor to join the families and loved ones of the 319th Signal Battalion in welcoming our service members home to Sacramento. Standing alongside these families was a powerful reminder of everything our servicemembers leave behind when they deploy—and everything they are willing to sacrifice in service to our nation. Your return brings relief, and it fills Sacramento with pride. Welcome home, and thank you for your service. https://t.co/eb4gIHemtI

I voted for the Affordable Care Act and helped create marketplaces to ensure every American had access to healthcare. The White House’s continued attacks on the ACA and Medi-Cal put families’ health and financial security at risk. I am deeply concerned about what these cuts will mean for Californians who access their care through Covered California plans. I will oppose these cuts at every step, fight to protect Medicaid, work to lower costs and keep families covered. https://t.co/FlQm1PrGig

Let’s be clear: this is censorship. President Trump is banning CNN, MSNBC, and POLITICO from the White House because he doesn’t like their reporting. No President gets to decide which journalists are allowed to do their jobs based on whether they like the coverage. The First Amendment protects a free and independent press from political interference. We cannot allow those freedoms to be eroded. https://t.co/WqJIpoxbls

I am horrified by the brutal attack in Wyoming last weekend on a fellow Sacramentan and member of the Sikh community. The persistent violence towards our Sikh neighbors, now inflamed by rhetoric from our own government, has always been unacceptable. My thoughts are with him, his family, and the entire Sikh community as he recovers from this senseless act of violence. Sacramento is home to a strong and vibrant Sikh community, and we must stand with them. Our only path forward is to do what Sacramento does best: we must stand shoulder to shoulder in defense of each other and the nation we want to be. https://t.co/86UZ4QyCwA

I was grateful to stand with our partners at NAMI, alongside my House colleagues, to reintroduce the 988 Implementation Act. NAMI’s leadership and the voices of advocates, families, and people who have experienced mental health crises firsthand are essential to this work. I’m thankful for their partnership as we fight to strengthen the 988 Lifeline so people have someone to call, someone who can respond, and somewhere safe to receive care.

Press Release
HOUSE PASSES MATSUI’S BIPARTISAN BILL TO CUT DIESEL POLLUTION, PROTECT SACRAMENTO FAMILIES

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-07) successfully passed the bipartisan Diesel Emissions Reduction Act of 2025, legislation to protect public health and lower the cost of replacing older, heavily polluting diesel engines. The bill, co-led by Representatives Ken Calvert (R-CA), Chellie Pingree (D-ME), and Nick Langworthy (R-NY), reauthorizes the successful Diesel Emissions Reduction Act program, known as DERA, through fiscal year 2029 at $100 million annually. The program provides grants and rebates that help schools, local governments, small businesses, and fleet operators replace or upgrade older diesel-powered trucks, buses, construction equipment, and other heavy-duty engines. “For more than two decades, DERA has been a model of effective, bipartisan policymaking,” said Congresswoman Matsui. “Under the program, California has replaced thousands of polluting trucks, tractors, and school buses, helping children breathe cleaner and healthier air as they ride to school. And now, as diesel prices reach $6 per gallon nationally, DERA is more important than ever. It doesn’t just save lives, it saves people money. I’m proud that the House voted to continue funding this practical, commonsense program.” “Diesel fuel powers Maine’s boats, ferries, buses, construction trucks, agricultural equipment, and more, but emissions from older diesel engines have serious consequences for public health and the environment. Since its passage in 2005, the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act has helped replace or retrofit nearly 100,000 diesel engines, vehicles, and pieces of equipment and deliver cleaner air and billions in public health benefits to communities across the country—including here in Maine,” said Congresswoman Pingree. “With Trump’s reckless war in Iran increasing volatility in global energy markets, and with the threats posed by climate change looming larger every day, Congress took a much-needed step today to reauthorize DERA so that we can continue to pursue solutions that help reduce our dependence on foreign energy and incentivize American consumers and businesses to embrace more efficient technologies. Reauthorizing this proven program will help us make progress on both fronts, while reducing pollution and improving air quality in Maine and across the country.” Older diesel engines remain in service across the economy because replacing heavy-duty equipment is costly, even though these engines produce an outsized share of the pollution that drives asthma, heart and lung disease, and premature death. The consequences are particularly severe in the Sacramento region, where the geography traps pollution and compounds the burden on communities near major transportation corridors.DERA helps retire these engines sooner by lowering the cost of cleaner replacements, returning up to $30 in public-health benefits for every federal dollar invested. DERA has delivered results through a voluntary, technology-neutral model that lets communities choose the upgrades best suited to their needs. Since 2008, the program has improved more than 76,900 vehicles and engines nationwide. Congresswoman Matsui has long been a champion of the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act, leading the previous reauthorization in 2019.

Ships docked at California’s ports run diesel generators day and night. The communities around them already carry far too heavy a pollution burden, so California took commonsense steps to clean up the air. Today, the House voted to repeal that protection. The stakes go beyond our ports. This vote threatens California’s ability to set stronger standards for every community that needs them. I voted no and will always defend California’s authority to protect the air we breathe.
