On Sunday, I had the pleasure of attending a service at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Culpeper. Thank you to Reverend Dr. Holley and the entire Mt. Olive Baptist Church family for the warm welcome! https://t.co/A8VzfiXhNM
Our troops should never be asked to carry out the political will of a president at the expense of our democracy. That’s why I’m backing @RepPatRyanNY’s legislation to prevent the president from weaponizing the military to interfere with our elections. Congress must make clear that Americans’ right to vote must remain free from intimidation, coercion, and military interference.
The latest inflation report doesn’t lie. Prices surged in September, with inflation climbing to 3.7%. Americans are paying the price for Trump’s war in Iran and Republicans’ economic agenda. November can’t get here soon enough. https://t.co/uApd3rJYxH
This is a vile and disgusting betrayal. Our Ukrainian allies are being slaughtered at home — while they sleep — without warning. By cutting off aid to Ukraine, Trump chose evil and oppression over liberty and freedom. Make him and Republicans pay in 20 days.
The proposed NextEra-Dominion merger is a bad deal for Virginians, and I’m fighting to stop it. On Friday, I joined fellow Virginians at the SCC hearing in Fairfax to demand that they reject this merger and put hardworking families ahead of corporate profits. We must stand with Main Street, not Wall Street. 📺 Watch my remarks:

Vindman Joins Local Elected Officials and Advocates in Calling on Regulators to Put Main Street Ahead of Wall Street Fairfax, Va. — Congressman Eugene Vindman (Va.-07) delivered remarks at the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) public hearing at the Fairfax County Government Center, urging regulators to reject the proposed NextEra-Dominion merger over concerns about its impact on Virginia families and utility ratepayers. Vindman joined local elected officials and community advocates in raising the alarm about the proposed merger, which he warned could further drive up electricity costs for Virginians already struggling with rising utility bills. Vindman Joins Advocates & Local Officials in Rallying Against the NextEra-Dominion Merger Prior to the hearing, Vindman joined advocates for a rally outside the Fairfax County Government Center, where attendees called for greater accountability and stronger protections for Virginia ratepayers. “Virginians are already paying too much to keep the lights on, and the last thing hardworking families need is a merger that could send their utility bills even higher,” said Vindman. “The State Corporation Commission has a responsibility to protect the people it serves. That means looking out for Main Street, not Wall Street. I urge the Commission to reject this bad deal for Virginians.” Vindman was the first member of Virginia’s congressional delegation to publicly oppose the proposed merger. He has continued to raise concerns about rising electricity costs, corporate accountability, and the need to ensure that Virginia families are not forced to shoulder the costs of unchecked data center growth. Vindman’s remarks, as prepared, are below. Click here to watch a video of his testimony. — Good evening. Thank you for holding this public event so you can hear directly from Virginians. I’m Congressman Eugene Vindman, and I represent about 800 thousand residents in Virginia’s Seventh District. I’m here tonight for a simple reason: I believe the proposed merger between NextEra and Dominion is a bad deal for Virginians. I urge the Commission to reject it. I was the first member of Virginia’s congressional delegation to speak out against this merger. And I did so in a letter to the Commission, which I hope you all read. Virginians are already paying too much to keep the lights on. I hear it everywhere I go. Families are opening their utility bills each month wondering how much more they can possibly be expected to absorb. This merger gives them every reason to worry that those bills will go even higher. Here’s the thing about utilities: Virginians don’t get to shop around for their electricity provider. Where you live determines who keeps your lights on and your home warm in the winter. That gives utility companies enormous power, and with that power comes a responsibility to the people they serve. It is not a license to squeeze more money out of hardworking families. NextEra’s own record should concern us. Customers of its Florida subsidiary have seen their utility bills rise by 33 percent. Now NextEra wants to take control of the utility serving millions of Virginians. NextEra sees enormous profits to be made in Virginia, particularly with the explosion of data centers. But I’ve been crystal clear: data centers must pay their fair share. Virginia families should not be subsidizing corporate expansion through higher electricity bills. This Commission’s job is to protect Main Street, not Wall Street. My concerns do not start and end with rates, however. I am very concerned about what this merger would do to the company’s accountability structure. Dominion is a Virginia company. Its decisions affect Virginia families, Virginia businesses, and Virginia communities every single day. Under the proposed ownership structure, three-quarters of the new company’s board would be controlled from Florida. And there are serious questions about NextEra’s conduct in Florida. The company agreed to a $150 million settlement over allegations involving political interference. That sounds like corruption. That record raises concerns about the influence this company could wield over Virginia’s energy future. When Virginians have a problem with their power bill, they deserve answers here in Virginia. I surveyed my constituents about this deal. More than 950 Virginians responded, and 80 percent opposed the merger. Their concerns were remarkably consistent, worried about higher bills, less accountability, and even more power concentrated in the hands of a massive utility. Those concerns deserve to be taken seriously. This Commission has a responsibility to protect Virginia ratepayers. Electricity is an essential service, not a luxury. And the privilege of serving millions of Virginians comes with an obligation to put those customers first. I respectfully urge you to put Virginia families ahead of Wall Street profits and reject this merger. Thank you. ###

As an Army JAG, I oversaw the post-trial legal proceedings following Nidal Hasan’s horrific attack at Fort Hood. I believed then, and I believe now, that he should face the fullest consequences of the law. But live-streaming his execution is what terrorists and authoritarian regimes do. It’s un-American.
🚨 HAPPENING NOW 🚨 I’m at the SCC hearing in Fairfax joining fellow Virginians in opposing the Dominion-NextEra merger. Virginians are already paying too much for electricity. We can’t afford a deal that could send bills even higher. https://t.co/34a4ATqY4K
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Eugene Vindman (Va.-07) joined Congressman Pat Ryan (N.Y.-18) and four of their Democratic Veteran colleagues in the U.S. House in introducing legislation to prevent the president from weaponizing the military to interfere with elections. Specifically, the bill would empower Congress to stop or reverse any domestic troop deployment ordered by the president. The introduction follows months of threats and actions by the Trump Administration to interfere with the November midterm elections and amid new reports from the Atlantic that advisors close to the President are encouraging him to declare martial law. Trump has repeatedly refused to rule out declaring a national emergency on elections, has already deployed thousands of U.S. troops against U.S. citizens in American cities, and suggested that Republicans should “nationalize” the midterm elections and “take over” the voting process. When asked directly in a House Armed Services Committee (HASC) hearing, a senior Trump military official refused to rule out troop deployments to polling sites. “As a 25-year Army veteran, I know our troops should never be asked to carry out the political will of a president at the expense of our democracy. Our military swears an oath to the U.S. Constitution and the American people, not any one president or political party,” said Vindman. “The prospect of using our armed forces to influence or interfere with our elections is dangerous and fundamentally at odds with the oath every service member takes. Congress must make clear that our military cannot be weaponized to interfere with Americans’ right to vote, and that our elections must remain free from intimidation, and military interference.” “Patriots in uniform sign up to fight for fundamental American freedoms – not against them. Trump using U.S. servicemembers as political pawns is straight-up un-American, and we’re not going to let him get away with it,” said Ryan. “Trump and those around him are scared – they know the American people are fed up with the war in Iran and skyrocketing prices. Instead of working to lower costs, Trump and his team are cooking up ways to intimidate voters, refusing to rule out domestic troop deployments. This bill provides a necessary check on the President. If he deploys troops, Congress can and will stop him. We won’t let this chickenhawk president exploit our servicemembers just because he can’t face the fact that the American people are fed up with his failed agenda of higher costs and unprecedented corruption.” Joining Vindman and Ryan are fellow Democratic veterans and U.S. Representatives Maggie Goodlander (N.H.-02), Chris Deluzio (Pa.-17), Chrissy Houlahan (Pa.-06), and Jimmy Panetta (Calif.-19). Senator Elissa Slotkin (Mich.) introduced companion legislation in the Senate. The bicameral legislation also includes $1 billion in new resources for state and local law enforcement on the ground. BACKGROUND Vindman is a 25-year Army veteran and member of the Democratic Veterans Caucus; Vindman also sits on the House Armed Services Committee, where he has become the leading voice of opposition to Trump’s war in Iran. ###
