Great discussion with a packed-house tonight at UCSB. Always great to visit my alma mater, but especially with the great folks at the Capps Center. Go Gauchos!

@JesseJenkins We can't work to improve this deal, and there can never be a better deal no matter what happens November 3rd, because... you just say so? All this certainty and absolutism is baffling, unless you have a reason to believe all these industry groups who want permitting reform will suddenly stop wanting it 3 months from now.

@DoctorVive @JesseJenkins No one knows for sure how Lame Duck Trump will behave, except for this: without real guardrails it's 100% certain he'll screw OSW and other renewables in every way he can (including tariffs, fake emergencies, etc.) while going pedal-to-the-metal for fossil. It's stunning to see smart people pretend that won't happen.

Checking in from a week in the North Coast! This week, I held a town hall in Gualala for residents from across the Mendocino and Sonoma Coast. 130 people attended, and the discussion was engaged and constructive. Many attendees expressed concern about the Trump administration surging ICE agents into California. Our communities must not become a staging ground for a lawless paramilitary force, and those agents must not be used in any way to interfere with our elections. I was inspired by the positive resolve in the room to take back our democracy. I also had the opportunity to visit several local projects and organizations: I toured the construction of the new community center in Gualala. It is part of the community’s plan to rebuild after the arson fire, and it is supported by a million-dollar grant I secured. I visited the Mendonoma Health Alliance, which is delivering care through a mobile clinic made possible by grant funding. I visited the Sea Ranch to meet with the North Sonoma Coast Fire Protection District. Its first responders are doing remarkable work to make our community more resilient!

There's a reason that, in movies, the guys in expensive suits who show up to chop down trees and bulldoze a public park to build a golf course are the villains. East Potomac Park belongs to the American people, not a shambolic president who thinks our public lands are part of his personal golf course portfolio.

We all have plenty to be outraged by these days, but add this to the list: through sheer lawlessness and brute force, Trump is trying to convert the historic East Potomac public golf course and park into a Epstein-class private club so he can host a PGA tournament in DC as another tribute to himself. And don't be surprised if he ends up owning (or stealing) it on his way out the door.

Rep. Huffman releases statement on Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's Decision to livestream execution

Washington, D.C. — Today, Representative Jared Huffman released the following statement regarding Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s remarks linking Nidal Hasan’s religious beliefs to the decision to livestream his execution: “Most Americans will be appalled at the sheer barbarity and bread-and-circus dystopia of this episode, but there's more to it than that. I have no doubt that Pete Hegseth's radical Christian nationalist worldview is behind all of this Hegseth believes he has a religious and patriotic duty to finish what the Christian crusaders started in the 11th century: defeat Islam and enthrone Christian dominion over the world. "He's written a book about it, talked about it as a civilizational imperative, and even tattooed his body with symbols of these extreme beliefs. So it's no surprise to those of us who have followed Hegseth that he went out of his way to mention that the Fort Hood shooter is a Muslim and to stress that this fact is part of the justification for a live-streamed public firing squad. If you need more proof that Hegseth is an unhinged fanatic who should be impeached and removed from office, you have it here." ###

After a devastating fire in 2023, the Gualala Community Center is rebuilding. I was able to get $1 million in federal funding for this project and it was great to visit the site and see all their progress. Thank you to the architects, construction crews, and dedicated community members working hard to bring this beloved community gathering space back to life!

I'll make this as simple and clear as possible: data centers do not belong in our national parks. Our public lands are for the public. They belong to the people, not big tech or Donald Trump. The fire sale of our lands to big tech to create data centers is a travesty, and I am ready to fight it when Democrats take back the House this November. My colleagues and I are already demanding answers from Secretary Burgum. The rapid pace of data center expansion is a strain on our communities and is a burden as they raise your electrical bills and consume our water. We must put guardrails and regulations in place to protect our lands from those who wish to exploit them.

Election Day is fast approaching, and I humbly ask you for your vote. Ballots have been mailed out and should be arriving shortly. If you don't receive yours by October 15th, make sure to contact your local registrar's office to sort out the issue. And be prepared to change your plans to vote in person if necessary. The last day to register to vote online is October 19th, and early voting begins October 24th. Now's the time to make your voting plan and to speak to your family and friends about voting. Donald Trump will try to cause as much chaos and confusion as possible, and the best defense is being prepared and getting your vote in early. Last month, a bipartisan group of Senators struck an ill-conceived "deal" to give Trump extra tariff power in legislation that was sold as a bill to sanction Russia over its brutal war on Ukraine. Like most things that come out of the Senate, it was built on a jam-the-House strategy designed to prevent any changes. Some of us rejected this terrible deal, warning that Trump would never crack down on Russia and that this would just be a naked giveaway of more tariff power for Trump to abuse. Sorry to say we told you so, but Jeeze Senators, how can such smart people be so goddamned gullible? Fresh from this experience, we'll soon consider the latest jam-the-House special: the bipartisan "deal" between Senators and Trump on permitting reform. Let's do better. https://t.co/xeu7JQcJz3

Opposite. It has provisions that might pay some clean energy developers money from the judgment fund when they are screwed, but nothing to actually approve their projects. This is potentially a replay of the fake settlements that have bought out offshore wind projects.

Gov Watchdog Finds Geothermal Developers Lack Permitting Tools Oil and Gas Companies Already Have

Washington, D.C. – Today, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a new report showing that companies trying to build geothermal power on public lands lack basic permitting tools that oil and gas companies already have and face confusing rules with no way to see where their permits stand, even as demand for geothermal development has grown more than fortyfold since 2020. The watchdog report, requested by U.S. House Natural Resources Committee Ranking Member Jared Huffman (D-Calif.), Rep. Susie Lee (D-Nev.), Rep. Joe Neguse (D-Colo.), Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), and Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D-N.M.) found that the permitting process can be inconsistent and lacks transparency, creating uncertainty for geothermal developers and federal land managers. Oil and gas companies file permits online, track them through a dedicated system, and work from public handbooks, while geothermal developers submit permit applications in writing, wait on unpublished handbooks, and have no system tracking their permits. The report comes as Congress has shown bipartisan interest in expanding geothermal energy development and private-sector interest in federal lands has grown significantly. According to GAO, nominations of federal lands for geothermal development increased from approximately 25,000 acres in 2020 to more than one million acres in 2025. Despite this growing interest, geothermal developers reported to GAO inconsistent permitting decisions for exploration activities. BLM has developed handbooks intended to clarify terminology and provide consistent guidance, but those documents have remained in draft form since at least 2022. GAO also found that BLM lacks a comprehensive mechanism for tracking geothermal permitting activity. BLM shut down its geothermal tracking system in 2021, and the system that took its place has no way to track geothermal permits. Oil and gas wells, however, are tracked in a dedicated system from initial permitting through final closure. As a result, BLM has limited visibility into permitting timelines and workloads, making planning more difficult for both developers and federal officials to anticipate project timelines and resource needs. The House has already voted to address these problems. The bipartisan Geothermal Energy Advancement Act (H.R. 5631), which passed the House in June, includes legislation sponsored by Rep. Lee, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, and Rep. Yassamin Ansari (D-Ariz.). Rep. Ansari’s Geothermal Gold Book Development Act would require the Bureau to publish standard permitting procedures, in line with GAO’s recommendation. Read the full report and recommendations here. ###

I wrote my book No Prophets to educate and raise awareness about a very real and growing threat to our democracy: Christian nationalism. In the six weeks since the book's release, I have been across the country speaking with thousands of Americans of all faith perspectives about how to stop this dangerous movement. Our founders were very clear in drawing a line of separation between church and state - a critical firewall against religious tyranny that Christian nationalists seek to destroy. It's not just the high profile power players like Mike Johnson and Pete Hegseth. Christian nationalist extremists are entrenched at the highest levels of government, as I reveal in the book. The good news is, come this November, there is something we can do about it: exercise our right to vote and elect a Congress that will stand up to these fanatics and their theocratic agenda.

@DoctorVive Confusing logic there. The FF industry has mastered the art of "selling" climate-wrecking things as climate solutions: clean coal, lifting the crude export ban, pimping natural gas as a "transition" fuel, claiming CCS is an actual thing, etc. ad nauseum. It doesn't show they "care about climate." More like the opposite.
