Real estate agents and direct sellers have long operated as independent contractors under the tax code, but federal labor law does not provide the same clarity. That’s why I’ve cosponsored the Direct Seller and Real Estate Agent Harmonization Act to align these federal standards and provide greater certainty for workers and businesses that rely on these independent contractor arrangements. Clear and consistent rules will help preserve flexibility while reducing unnecessary regulatory uncertainty. https://t.co/NINlKYFpAs
Drivers in Utah are currently paying $4.92 per gallon for gas, while Californians are paying nearly $1.50 more per gallon and more than $2 above the national average. California’s onerous fuel regulations and taxes continue to raise costs for families across our state. We need commonsense energy policies that expand supply, lower prices, and give California consumers more affordable choices.
Decisions at the EPA should be based on transparent, rigorous, and impartial science. I’m proud to cosponsor the Establishing Gold Standard Science Act to strengthen scientific integrity at the agency by improving transparency, addressing conflicts of interest, and ensuring the full weight of available evidence is considered. Americans deserve confidence that major regulatory decisions are grounded in sound science. https://t.co/EJyh313QGV
AI is advancing rapidly, and Congress has an important role to play in addressing the most serious risks without undermining American innovation. I recently joined Elex Michaelson on CNN’s “The Story Is” to discuss my bipartisan FRONTIER Act and how we can establish clear, risk-based guardrails for the most advanced AI systems while keeping the United States at the forefront of AI development.
One of the most important opportunities presented by AI is its ability to make complex systems easier to navigate. https://t.co/qf2EoAcoqt is a new example of that approach, using AI to help Americans find federal information and services across government websites. As AI continues to develop, we should be looking for practical applications that improve access to government and make federal services easier to use.

My office is hosting a Military Service Academy Night on Thursday, October 15, at Yucaipa City Hall for students in grades 8–12, parents, and educators. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about the service academy admissions process, academy requirements, college ROTC opportunities, and the Congressional nomination process. High school seniors applying this year are especially encouraged to attend!
The creation of the new White House task force on advanced AI is an important step toward ensuring America remains the global leader in this transformative technology while addressing the risks posed by the most advanced systems. Our bipartisan House Task Force on Artificial Intelligence made clear that getting this balance right requires a risk-based approach that addresses serious threats without stifling American innovation. That same principle is at the heart of my bipartisan FRONTIER Act, and I look forward to working with the Administration as it develops its recommendations. https://t.co/jb8AO4gv9i
I’m delighted that Loma Linda University has been awarded an $8 million NIH grant to build a new Cellular Therapy Research Facility. I was pleased to support the university’s application for this funding earlier this year. The facility will provide the laboratory space needed to advance research in cell, gene, and regenerative medicine therapies. This is an important investment in Loma Linda’s research capabilities and its work to develop innovative new treatments for patients. https://t.co/qxZ7Xwdbm8
AI is developing rapidly, with the potential to benefit many sectors of our economy and society. As these systems grow more capable, Congress needs to understand the risks they present and ensure developers have appropriate processes to identify and address them. I recently joined CBS Los Angeles to discuss how my bipartisan FRONTIER Act would establish guardrails for the most advanced AI models without stifling American innovation.
Our service members should have clear guidance on their VA benefits and how to apply for them prior to leaving active duty. To address this, I’ve cosponsored the TAP Promotion Act to strengthen pre-separation counseling with better information on the claims process and how VA-accredited representatives can help service members file for the benefits they have earned. https://t.co/F9SJnpstYX
Edwards Air Force Base depends on a skilled aviation workforce to carry out its critical test and evaluation missions. I was pleased to support Muroc Joint Unified School District’s application for a $10.95 million grant to build a new aviation maintenance training facility at Edwards, and I’m delighted to learn that they’ve been awarded this funding. The facility will expand hands-on technical training for local students and create additional opportunities for military personnel, veterans, and other residents to earn aviation maintenance credentials. This is an important investment in both the future of Edwards and our region’s aerospace workforce. https://t.co/hjLGDE2BxW
A constituent recently contacted our office after losing access to her Direct Express card, leaving her unable to access her Social Security benefits for several months. She tried repeatedly to update her information, but the issue remained unresolved. My office contacted Direct Express, which verified her identity and mailed her a replacement card shortly thereafter. If you need help with a federal agency, stop by one of our Mobile Office Hours or contact our district office in Hesperia. We’re here to serve you!
Fusion energy has the potential to be a reliable domestic source of clean power and to strengthen America’s energy independence. I am pleased to join Rep. Zoe Lofgren in introducing the bipartisan American Leadership in Fusion Act to support the research facilities and partnerships needed to move fusion technology to commercial reality. The United States has made significant advances in fusion research, and this legislation will help turn that progress into a source of power Americans can use. https://t.co/M6DlpYz4Up
2433 Rayburn House Office Building, Washington, DC 20515 Email Me 202-225-5861 Subscribe WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congressman Jay Obernolte (R-CA-23) and Congresswoman Lori Trahan (D-MA-03), authors of the bipartisan FRONTIER Act, issued the following statement on the White House Accord signed by leading AI companies on Tuesday: “This week, America's leading AI companies signed the White House Accord, an important step toward ensuring that the most advanced AI systems are developed responsibly. The Accord embraces several principles at the heart of our bipartisan FRONTIER Act: robust internal risk management, strong corporate governance, and independent third-party evaluation. It shows that the industry's leaders see real value in these safeguards, and we look forward to each company expeditiously following through.” “The FRONTIER Act would build on this foundation and make it durable. It sets clear, risk-based national standards for the largest developers and most advanced models. It gives independent verifiers a common standard to assess against, with federal oversight to back it up. It establishes uniform transparency and incident reporting, and emergency authority to stop a catastrophe before it happens. Importantly, the FRONTIER Act does this while keeping America at the forefront of AI innovation. We look forward to working with the President, our colleagues in both chambers, and American innovators to advance this bipartisan framework.” ###
With my support, the City of Twentynine Palms has been awarded $8.54 million to improve transportation access to the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center. The Combat Center’s mission depends on reliable routes for the Marines, civilian personnel, and local residents who travel to and from the installation. I’m pleased to see this investment in infrastructure that serves both the base and the Twentynine Palms community. https://t.co/E0RyAq2niR
Congratulations to my wife, Heather, for being honored with the Prevent Cancer Foundation’s Congressional Families Leadership Award! Our family knows firsthand how deeply cancer can affect the people we love, and I’m grateful for Heather’s dedication to helping more families get the information they need to take action early. https://t.co/fE0FiMytaE
On Gold Star Mothers and Families Day, we honor the families of the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. Their loved ones made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation, and these families carry that sacrifice with them every day. We will never forget their courage, strength, and enduring devotion to those they lost.
Hardworking families deserve to know that their tax dollars are being protected against fraud and abuse. I was pleased to support the National Fraud Enforcement Division Act, which passed the House this week. This bill will strengthen the Department of Justice’s ability to investigate and prosecute fraud involving federally funded programs and help ensure those who defraud taxpayers are held accountable. https://t.co/WOYfoUK7yq
The United States must continue to lead the world in aviation innovation. I’m proud that my bipartisan Aviation Innovation and Global Competitiveness Act advanced out of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. This bill will help modernize the FAA’s certification process, provide greater regulatory certainty for innovators, and support the development of next-generation aviation technologies. It is critical that our regulatory framework keeps pace with innovation while maintaining the highest standards of safety. https://t.co/6zA1DQA5rG
The United States can address the real risks posed by artificial intelligence while ensuring our regulatory approach does not undermine American innovation and global leadership in AI. I recently joined Bret Baier on Special Report with Rep. Lori Trahan to discuss our bipartisan FRONTIER Act and the need for a thoughtful approach to AI policy.
Our budget process should give Congress a clear picture of how legislation will affect taxpayers over the long term. I’m pleased that my bipartisan Preventive Health Savings Act advanced unanimously out of the House Budget Committee this week. This bill will allow the Congressional Budget Office to consider the long-term savings of preventive health care policies beyond its traditional 10-year budget window. This commonsense reform will help ensure these policies are evaluated based on their full fiscal impact.
As Chairman of the House Republican Policy Committee, I enjoyed welcoming CMS Deputy Administrator Kim Brandt for a comprehensive discussion on efforts to combat healthcare fraud and the role AI can play in identifying fraudulent activity. As these emerging technologies continue to improve, it is critical that we explore how they can be used to better safeguard taxpayer dollars and strengthen the integrity of our federal healthcare programs.
It was a pleasure meeting with members of the California VFW to discuss the issues facing Veterans across our state and how Congress can continue improving the care, benefits, and services they receive. Our Veterans answered the call to serve our country, and we have a responsibility to ensure they receive the support they've earned through their service. I remain committed to fighting for policies that support our veterans and strengthen the services they receive.
There are real risks associated with increasingly advanced AI systems, but we must mitigate those risks while still allowing the beneficial uses of AI to thrive. I joined NewsNation Live to discuss how my bipartisan FRONTIER Act would establish appropriate oversight and safeguards for the most advanced AI systems while ensuring the United States continues to lead the world in AI. As this technology develops, Congress needs to focus on clear, identifiable risks and put in place a framework that protects Americans without undermining our ability to innovate.
