Social media usually gives me only a minute or two to cover something. My Hurd in the House podcast gives me a chance to slow down and actually have a conversation. Here are a few behind-the-scenes shots from recording my latest episode at Pueblo Community College with Army veteran Jacobo Varela. We talked about his experience with the VA, where the system works, where it doesn’t, and what veterans want Washington to understand. #CO03 You can watch this episode (and catch up on earlier episodes of Hurd in the House) here: https://t.co/mRYMm9lTTZ
Manufacturing has long been part of Pueblo’s history, and it remains an important part of Southern Colorado’s economic future. At Pueblo Community College’s Made in the Steel City Manufacturing Day, students had the opportunity to meet local employers and explore careers in manufacturing. I was proud to work with President Hazelbaker and the Department of Labor to help secure $10.7 million for Pueblo Community College to expand workforce training and connect more students with good-paying jobs. Investing in our local workforce means creating opportunities for young people to build their careers and raise their families right here in Southern Colorado. Thank you to President Hazelbaker and @Sonderling47 for their partnership and commitment to Pueblo. #CO03
Thank you, Pueblo. I’m grateful for your support. Let’s keep putting Colorado’s Third District first. #CO03 #ILovePueblo https://t.co/vljFfAVxjs
For 251 years, the United States Navy has defended our country and protected American interests at sea and around the world. Today, we thank the sailors serving now, the veterans who served before them, and their families. Happy Birthday, U.S. Navy. 🇺🇸⚓ #CO03 https://t.co/uAK3phyXC9
Election Day is just three weeks away, and ballots are arriving across Colorado’s Third District. From protecting our water and supporting our farmers and ranchers to standing up for veterans and first responders, producing more American energy, and lowering costs for hardworking families, the priorities of Western and Southern Colorado have guided my work in Congress. I’ve worked every day to deliver real results for the people I represent, and I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished together. There is more work to do. Make a plan to return your ballot, encourage your friends and neighbors to vote, and let’s keep putting Colorado’s Third District first. #CO03
Veterans across Southern Colorado deserve timely access to the care and benefits they’ve earned through their service. Last week, I welcomed VA Secretary Doug Collins to Pueblo Community College to hear directly from local veterans about the challenges they face, particularly in rural communities. We discussed improving access to care, expanding mental health services, and making the VA more responsive to the veterans it serves. Pueblo is the Home of Heroes, and we have a responsibility to stand by the men and women who have served our country. I appreciate Secretary Collins coming to Southern Colorado, listening to our veterans, and working with us to address these challenges. I’ll keep fighting to make sure veterans across Western and Southern Colorado get the care and benefits they’ve earned. Read more from FOX21 News ⬇️ https://t.co/QHuC0EU2Kc
Hurd in the House Episode 13 is live on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and YouTube! This week, I sat down with Jacobo Varela, Executive Director of TRIO College Opportunity Programs and Director of Veterans Upward Bound at Colorado State University Pueblo. A U.S. Army veteran, Jacobo has spent more than a decade helping veterans in Southern Colorado find resources and new opportunities. We talked about the challenges veterans can face when navigating benefits and services, where to turn for help, and how education and community connections can support the transition to civilian life. Take a listen! #CO03 Spotify: https://t.co/2fjnaLplzv YouTube: https://t.co/mRYMm9lm4r
When a wildfire starts, every minute matters. At a hearing on disaster prevention, I asked John Gale of Pano AI how faster detection can help firefighters respond sooner. In Douglas County, Pano’s system alerted response agencies within minutes of detecting the Bear Creek Fire. A local helitack crew responded, and the fire was contained to less than three acres. Technology like this can give firefighters something they rarely have enough of: time. #CO03 Watch the rest of my questioning here: https://t.co/SGV8B5QmR2
Spent the last few days in Pueblo knocking doors and visiting with community leaders, veterans, first responders, families, and small business owners. There’s no substitute for hearing directly from the people you represent. These conversations are a reminder of what matters most to the people of Pueblo and why I’m fighting for them in Washington. Thank you to everyone who took the time to visit with me and to the volunteers who came out to help. Ballots are out, and I’m working hard to earn your vote and the opportunity to keep serving Colorado’s Third District. #CO03 #ILovePueblo
I have raised concerns directly with the White House and Pentagon about reports that the Administration may livestream Nidal Hasan’s execution. Hasan murdered 13 people and wounded 32 others at Fort Hood. His crimes were horrific, and he deserves to face justice. But how our government administers justice matters. We should not broadcast an execution to the world. I hope the Administration reconsiders. https://t.co/rK8TCzbTjP
I’m honored to be endorsed by the Grand Junction Area Chamber of Commerce. My job is to represent Western and Southern Colorado — not rubber-stamp my party or anyone in Washington. That means listening to the businesses that keep this region working, thinking for myself, and standing with them when it counts. I will keep putting our business community and this district first. #CO03
Great turnout at the Pueblo Police Department’s open house! Thank you to Chief Chris Noeller and the entire @PuebloPolice1 team for the opportunity to see their work firsthand, tour the real-time crime center, and get a better understanding of the training officers go through. Our law enforcement officers put themselves on the line every day to keep our communities safe. I’m grateful for their service and will always stand with the men and women who protect Pueblo. #ILovePueblo #CO03
The devastating wildfires and flooding across Southern Colorado have destroyed homes, displaced families, and left communities facing a long road to recovery. Last month, I brought Western Caucus Chair @RepMaloyUtah and Chairmen @RepWesterman and @RepBrianBabin to Southern Colorado to see firsthand the damage from the Aspen Acres and Gold Mountain Fires and the challenges our communities continue to face. I appreciate my colleagues taking the time to see what families in our district are up against. Recovering and rebuilding won’t happen overnight, and I’ll keep working to make sure our communities have the federal support they need to get back on their feet. #CO03 Read more from CBS Colorado: https://t.co/jpNQL1xJMZ
Thank you to Secretary Collins for coming to Pueblo, the Home of Heroes, to hear directly from our veterans and local leaders. We’ve made progress reducing VA processing times, but there’s more work to do. Veterans across Western and Southern Colorado deserve timely, reliable care and the benefits they’ve earned through their service. I’ll keep fighting to make sure they get both. #CO03

I’m grateful to the Grand Junction Sentinel editorial board for their endorsement. I’ve always believed my job is to represent the people of Western and Southern Colorado, not simply go along with my party or anyone in Washington. That means thinking for myself, working across party lines when we can find common ground, and standing firm when we disagree. We won’t always agree on every issue, but the people of this district will always know where I stand and who I’m fighting for. Colorado’s Third District comes first. Always. #CO03 https://t.co/692SMNBJI7
Three years ago, Hamas terrorists carried out the deadliest attack against the Jewish people since the Holocaust, murdering more than 1,200 people and taking more than 250 hostage. I will never forget visiting Kibbutz Nir Oz and seeing firsthand what was left behind after the October 7 attacks. Today, we remember the innocent lives taken that day, stand with Jewish communities against antisemitism and hatred, and reaffirm our support for Israel’s security and its right to exist. We will not forget October 7.
Three years ago today, Hamas terrorists murdered more than 1,200 innocent people in Israel and took hundreds hostage. I visited Nir Oz and saw the aftermath with my own eyes. That day cannot be minimized, excused, or forgotten. We remember every life stolen. We stand with the families still grieving. And we reaffirm America’s support for Israel, its right to exist and the Jewish community — here in Colorado and around the world. Never again is not a slogan. It is a commitment. 🇺🇸🇮🇱 #October7 #StandWithIsrael
Over the last few months I’ve had the chance to join Lincoln Day events across the district, including this one in Las Animas County. These gatherings are a good opportunity to hear directly from people about what they’re seeing in their communities, what they want from Washington, and where they think our country needs to go. In a district this large, there’s no substitute for showing up and having the conversation. Ballots are out, and we’re less than a month from Election Day. With your support, I’ll continue putting western and southern Colorado first. #CO03
Reminder to student entrepreneurs across #CO03: there’s still time to apply for America250’s America’s Startup competition. Undergraduate college and trade school students with an early-stage business idea can apply individually or in teams of up to five. Thirty semifinalist teams will be invited to Washington, D.C., to pitch in person, and finalists can receive up to $50,000 to help develop their businesses. Western and Southern Colorado are full of young people with good ideas. If you’ve been thinking about starting something, this is worth a look. Applications are due October 8. Western Colorado has skilled manufacturers doing work that contributes directly to our national defense. I toured Valor Tactical with CEO Jan Zickerman and learned more about the company’s engineering and manufacturing work here in Mesa County, including mounts for a .50-caliber M2 machine gun that Valor is currently putting through live-fire testing. Valor is a good example of how Western Colorado’s manufacturing expertise can support our servicemembers while creating skilled jobs here at home. #CO03
Colorado’s Third District is full of talented students with the creativity and skills to build what comes next. The Congressional App Challenge gives middle and high school students across #CO03 a chance to turn an idea into an app and put their coding and problem-solving skills to work. Submissions are due October 26. Learn more about eligibility and how to enter at https://t.co/1biDXbFMDq. I’m looking forward to seeing what students across Western and Southern Colorado create.
Grateful to Tim Foster and Scott McInnis for this in the Daily Sentinel. Two leaders with a combined 38 years serving western Colorado — in the legislature, in Congress, and on the Mesa County commission — wrote that results matter more than theatrics. That’s the job. Do the right thing for the district, and the politics take care of themselves. Ballots are in the mail. Make a plan, return yours, and bring a neighbor with you. Election Day is November 3. #CO03 https://t.co/PzrdIvMglN
Geothermal can produce reliable American energy around the clock. We should be doing a lot more with it. That’s why I’m co-chairing the new bipartisan Congressional Geothermal Caucus with @RepSalinas, @RepAuchincloss, and @RepNickBegich. Republicans and Democrats agree there’s an opportunity here. Our job now is to find practical ways to get more geothermal projects built, strengthen the grid, and meet America’s growing demand for energy. Colorado has real potential to be part of that future. #CO03 Read more: https://t.co/K1QYCfYuDD
