More than a century ago, at Mount Wilson Observatory in the San Gabriel Mountains, astronomers made the groundbreaking discovery that a vast universe lies beyond our Milky Way galaxy. Today, I introduced a resolution to designate October 5th as National Beyond the Milky Way Day, celebrating this landmark discovery and the pioneering work of Carnegie Science astronomers whose research fundamentally transformed our understanding of the universe.
This report confirms a devastating failure during the Eaton Fire. For more than THREE HOURS, first responders were seeing dangerous conditions in west Altadena before the first widespread evacuation alert went out. By the time the final zone was alerted, the fire had already torn through the community. 18 of the 19 people we lost died in west Altadena.
