Ohioans are paying more than ever to keep the lights on, but Derek Merrin says the Big Beautiful Bill is "lowering energy costs." Northwest Ohio families know that's a lie. That bill handed data center giants massive tax breaks, letting them write off huge shares of construction costs and fueling a nationwide data center boom. Derek Merrin cheered on the Big Bonanza for Billionaire's Bill. I voted NO. Now, Ohio has more than 200 data centers operating or planned, and Derek’s vote to expand data center tax breaks helped sweeten the deal, driving up rates for all of us. I'm fighting to make data center companies pay their fair share, so Northwest Ohio isn't left paying the price.

Had a lovely morning at the Apple Butter Festival at MacQueen Orchards in Holland. Between the fresh cider, warm donuts, and families out picking apples and pumpkins, it was a great chance to meet folks from all across NW Ohio. Thank you to everyone at MacQueen's for hosting this fall favorite tradition, and to all who took the time to say hello.

Thank you to SEIU for hosting today's roundtable at UAW Local 12, and to our panelists for speaking about how the affordability crisis is hitting their families. I’ll always have the backs of these hardworking men and women to protect their right to organize and bargain for better wages, safe working conditions, and a secure retirement. I will always fight and stand up for working people to ensure Washington works for them. The stakes of this election are critical for NW Ohio families — they deserve leaders who stand with them, not paid-for politicians who stand with the Billionaire class and powerful corporations.

When you work hard, pay into your pension, or put on the uniform to serve our country, you deserve to know the promises Washington made to you are kept. That’s why I wrote the bill that became the Butch Lewis Act, protecting pensions for more than 100,000 Ohio workers and retirees. I introduced the VET HP Act and got it signed into law, opening VA hospitals to train the next generation of doctors and nurses. And as a senior member of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, I helped write and pass the PACT Act, delivering health care to millions of veterans exposed to toxic burn pits. I’ll always fight for the working people who built this country and the veterans who have defended it.

For 2 years this Administration has taken efforts that severely harmed our economy—wage growth is falling, while unemployment is on the rise. Their reckless across the board tariffs on our closest allies, war of choice in Iran, and tax breaks for Billionaires haven't made life more affordable.

Kaptur Applauds Drug-Free Communities Award to Support Williams County

Montpelier, OH — Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09), a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, announced that the Williams County Health Department will receive a $125,000 Drug-Free Communities award through the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The award will support the health department’s Educating Communities on Healthy Opportunities (ECHO) Coalition, which works to prevent substance abuse in youth and adults throughout Williams County. “I am honored to partner with the Williams County Health Department to deliver vital Federal dollars to bring about meaningful change in people’s lives,” said Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09). “Northwest Ohioans deserve resources and support to prevent and tackle substance abuse, and the ECHO Coalition brings that support right to our back doors. Their programs bring together people from all sectors of the county to provide the proactive approach to substance abuse and mental health that our communities so desperately need.” “The Williams County Health Department's Drug-Free Communities (DFC) grant has strengthened substance use prevention efforts across Williams County by bringing schools, community organizations, healthcare providers, law enforcement, and youth together around a shared goal,” said Katie Lantzsch, the Williams County Health Department’s Director of Health Education and Preparedness. “The grant has expanded prevention education, empowered local youth to lead change in their communities, and helped build a stronger network of support to reduce risk factors and promote healthy choices for future generations.” Through her role on the House Appropriations Committee, Congresswoman Kaptur has been instrumental in securing Federal investments for substance abuse prevention across our Northwest Ohio community. In July 2026, she announced two $125,000 DFC awards for EHOVE Career Center’s Future Leaders Program in Sandusky and for the Springfield Area Prevention Coalition in Swanton. Last week Congresswoman Kaptur announced that the Erie County Department of Health had been awarded an $800,000 grant award through HHS for Substance Abuse Treatment. Congresswoman Kaptur also delivered a $1.8 Million Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) award to the Erie County Health Department in 2023. On National Manufacturing Day, we celebrate everything proudly made in Northwest Ohio and, most importantly, the hardworking men and women who make it possible. To every worker on the line, in the plant, and on the factory floor, thank you. From the Jeeps rolling out of Toledo, to the engines built in Defiance, and the glass that gave the Glass City its name, the work done here is the backbone of the American economy, because what America makes and grows, makes and grows America. Generations of families have built good lives on these jobs, and they've built our region up along with them. As we honor that legacy, we must invest in our future—strengthening our workforce, building more here at home, and creating new good-paying jobs for all the generations to come.

Homeownership is falling further out of reach for working families because Wall Street Billionaires are pricing them out. When private equity buys up single-family homes across our neighborhoods, they raise the prices, making it harder to afford for renters and buyers. I'm fighting to build more affordable housing, stop corporate investors from driving up costs, and bring capital back home to our local savings and loans and main street credit unions and local banks—the lenders who know and invest in our communities. Kaptur Applauds $280,000 Federal Investment in Owens Community College

Perrysburg, OH — Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09), a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, announced that Owens Community College will receive a $280,000 award through the United States Department of Education. The award will support the college’s TRIO Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) in its mission to help adults and US veterans enroll in and complete postsecondary education. "Education is a pathway to higher-paying jobs, stronger careers and a more resilient economy,” said Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09). “By supporting non-traditional students in their pursuit of learning we help lay the groundwork for brighter futures and job growth in our region. From application assistance and career counseling to specialized support for veterans, Owens Community College’s EOC meets students where they are on their skills development journey and looks to their future as integral to our region’s success.” “We are grateful for the continued support in recognizing the impact TRIO has on our region,” said Dr. Dione D. Somerville, president of Owens Community College. “Since 2021, this program has served nearly 2,500 individuals, helping hundreds enroll or re-enroll in college and take real steps toward their education and career goals. Expanding from 850 to 1,000 individuals served each year is not just a number. It represents real people who will now have the guidance and support they need to pursue a better life through education and training. We’re proud to build on five years of work that has already changed thousands of lives, their families, communities and Northwest Ohio.” TRIO is a Federal program designed to identify and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds, particularly those who are low-income, first-generation college students, individuals with disabilities, or veterans, in accessing higher education. Its Educational Opportunity Centers program specifically aims to increase the number of adults enrolled in postsecondary education. Owens Community College is home to a TRIO EOC that provides free college readiness support to hundreds of Northwest Ohio adults each year. # # #

Kaptur, Murray Slam Trump Administration’s Oil Reserve Release as Months Too Late for Families Paying High Energy Costs

Toledo, OH – Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09), Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development, and Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Vice Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee and Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development, released the following statement in response to the Department of Energy’s announcement of another release of crude oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. “Families in Washington State, Northwest Ohio, and all across the country are still paying too much at the pump and on their home energy bills — and this latest release from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve woefully comes months too late to bring those high costs down. The Trump Administration says the deal costs taxpayers nothing, yet it has not set aside the money needed to refill the Reserve for the majority of the barrels owed back, which leaves our country less ready for the next emergency. This is a show put on to distract from the fact that this Administration is responsible for sending gas prices skyrocketing, and working families will keep paying for it in the days, weeks, months, and years to come,” said Kaptur and Murray. On September 29, the Department of Energy issued a request for proposals to exchange up to 40 million barrels of crude oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The exchange is part of a 172-million-barrel release the Trump Administration announced in March. Under an exchange, companies borrow oil from the Reserve and must later return it with extra barrels. Because none of the oil is sold, the exchanges bring in no money to pay for transport and other costs associated with moving it back into the Reserve.

Kaptur Secures Additional Investment in Northwest Ohio Head Start Programs In Lucas and Erie Counties

Toledo, OH — Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) announced that two Northwest Ohio Head Start programs will receive a total of $233,955 in awards to support their efforts in preparing young children and families for school. Toledo Public Schools will receive $70,955, and the Community Action Commission of Erie, Huron, and Richland Counties will receive $163,000. These investments are in addition to a a $5,131,429 award the Northwestern Ohio Community Action Partnership based in Defiance received just last week. These awards were made possible through the United States Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families. “Equipping our region’s youth and families with the resources they need to succeed in life has ripple effects on our entire community,” said Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09). “Our Head Start programs are privileged to have countless dedicated and caring adults that invest in our children each day, serving as positive role models and demonstrating that every child can reach their full potential. I am honored to have secured these Federal awards to allow the next generation of children to continue to grow and blossom through Head Start programs, and I will always fight to ensure our communities have the funds they need to make sure our children get ahead.” Head Start, along with its companion program Early Head Start, helps children under the age of 5 and their families prepare for school. Through learning experiences, health assessments, family support, and early intervention, Head Start serves more than 25,000 young children throughout Ohio. As a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, Congresswoman Kaptur is dedicated to ensuring that Head Start programs both here in our region and across the country have the resources they need to provide for youth and their families. When the Trump Administration’s failure to provide funding to Ohio Head Start programs in 2025 forced Toledo-area programs to halt, Kaptur fought for answers until funding was restored.

Washington Republicans made health care more expensive when they passed the Big Bonanza for Billionaire’s Bill. It gutted Medicaid and Medicare while letting key provisions of ACA coverage expire, doubling premiums for nearly half a million Ohioans. Ohio has seen the steepest drop in ACA coverage of any state. Derek Merrin cheered it on and he’s gone even further, calling for repealing the ACA entirely—putting coverage for pre-existing conditions at risk. Ohio families can’t afford another yes-man for Washington’s Billionaire First agenda. I'll keep working across the aisle to bring down drug prices, strengthen Medicare, and make sure everyone has access to affordable care.
