Fun Fact Friday: As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence, I want to highlight some of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. It is generally believed that John Hart was born in Hopewell, New Jersey, around 1713. With little formal schooling, John made his wealth by investing in property. By the 1770s, he was the largest landowner in the Hopewell community. John served in various leadership positions in his community, and was a staunch supporter of Independence. John was elected to the Second Continental Congress and was the thirteenth member to sign the Declaration of Independence. He later returned home and was elected Speaker of the General Assembly. John passed away in 1779, and never saw the nation become independent from England.

BDO’s focus is on government program management, compliance, and disaster recovery.
I was honored to speak at the grand opening for the Hinds Health Sciences Complex in Pearl. With 160,000 square feet of new space and a $64 million investment, this facility will educate over 500 students annually in high-demand health care jobs. I am proud to support the work Hinds Community College is doing to educate the workforce of tomorrow.
Members of my D.C. and District staff were recently invited to tour Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center. Camp Shelby is the nation’s largest state-owned military training facility, training soldiers from across our nation. Fun Fact Friday: As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence, I want to highlight some of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Joseph Hewes was born in 1730 near Princeton, New Jersey. Upon finishing an apprenticeship under a merchant, he moved to North Carolina. Gaining a reputation as a man of honor, he was elected as a member of the Colonial Legislature. He served until the legislature closed in 1775, and he joined the Patriot cause. He helped to support the start of the American Navy and signed the Declaration of Independence. Sadly, Hewes did not live to see independence and died in November of 1779.
I was honored to present Mary Grace “MG” Tomlinson with the JROTC Legion of Valor Bronze Cross for Achievement. Mary Grace is an Army JROTC, Cadet from Florence High School. She is one of only 26 cadets nationwide to receive this award. Recipients are selected by distinguished board veterans who themselves have received some of our nation's highest military awards, including the Navy Cross and the Medal of Honor.
