I’m telling mass surveillance technology to get the flock out of here. My new bill, the Get the Flock Out of Our Communities Act, is the only bill in Congress designed to completely prohibit the use of automated mass surveillance technology, including biometric surveillance systems and facial recognition technology.
DHS raiding a member of congress's home is exactly what a fascist police state does. This president should not be able to weaponize the federal government against political enemies. I stand with Ilhan.
Trump is grossly abusing his power to raid the home of Rep. Omar. He has repeatedly attacked her, Somali Americans, and Minnesotans. @Ilhan has done nothing to justify a pre-dawn raid ahead of the election. I stand with my sister always.
The people of Puerto Rico are suffering from water and electricity crises as a result of their status as a U.S. colony. They’re being exploited. I will always fight against colonialism and demand Puerto Ricans' right to self-determination. https://t.co/jGX68L97FD
What happened to Bernadette Greene-Placentia should make us all sick to our stomachs. There is no excuse, no justification, and no place for sexual violence in our society. No woman, congressional candidate, staffer, student–or anyone– should ever be raped or sexually assaulted. I stand with Bernadette and every survivor. https://t.co/f8UUkZBKAH
Book bans threaten our First Amendment rights, silence marginalized voices, and keep young people from seeing themselves in the stories they read. We must protect our libraries, schools, and public institutions from censorship, which is why I support the Fight Book Bans Act. Everyone should have the freedom to learn and explore through reading. https://t.co/8j9WHpuBSM
My Safe Storage Saves Lives Act requires guns to be sold with gun locks because responsibility and safety are crucial for gun ownership. Michigan’s Health and Human Services distributes free gun locks in efforts to stop this public health crisis. Find a gun lock now: https://t.co/CoLIyhjHU6
My heart breaks for the 11-year-old who was unintentionally shot by a sibling with an unsecured gun in Detroit. Guns should always be locked and kept away from kids, but 6.7 million kids live in homes with an unlocked and loaded gun. We can save eight kids every day by safely storing guns. https://t.co/87548x9akF

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Reps. Rashida Tlaib (MI-12) and Lou Correa (CA-46) today reintroduced a resolution remembering and honoring the life and legacy of Alex Odeh. The resolution acknowledges Alex’s impact on his community and the country, and reaffirms the importance of pursuing justice against those responsible for his death. “Alex Odeh was a teacher, a poet, and a man of peace, and he was murdered in our community simply for speaking up for civil and human rights,” said Correa. “He was a voice for peace and dignity in Orange County. Remembering him is the least we can do, and pursuing justice for his family is our obligation.” Rep. Correa represents the district where Alex and his family lived and where the attack took place. “Alex Odeh dedicated his life to achieving true equality and equity for all. For daring to push for a better tomorrow, Alex was assassinated by members of the Jewish Defense League, and his killers have yet to be brought to justice,” said Tlaib. “This horrific act of anti-Arab and anti-Palestinian violence was, and is not, new. But this violence will never silence us. Those who continue to fear-monger and incite hate against us will not win. Arab and Palestinian Americans are still here, loud and proud, carrying on Alex’s legacy.” Read the bill text here. About Alex Odeh Alex was born in Jifna, Palestine, and lived in Orange County, California, for most of his adult life, including Santa Ana. He was a peace activist who worked to promote civil liberties for Arab-Americans in the United States. Alex Odeh was the Southern California Regional Director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC). On October 11, 1985, Alex was killed when a pipe bomb exploded as he entered the ADC regional office in Santa Ana, California. Although the primary suspects have long been known, no one has been brought to justice. The investigation remains open.
"Why would you need courage to speak the truth?" Nobel Peace Prize winner Navi Pillay led the UN commission that found Israel guilty of genocide in Gaza. Governments must finally follow the commission's recommendations and impose an arms embargo and prosecute all perpetrators.
Free Ya'akub Vijandre! He is a DACA recipient and photojournalist detained by ICE for over a year for speaking out against genocide and for simply liking a social media post. This is a clear attack on free speech. With @RepAlGreen, I led 21 of my colleagues to demand his release.
WASHINGTON – U.S. Reps. Rashida Tlaib (MI-12) and Al Green (TX-09), joined by 21 Members of Congress, demanded the release of Ya’akub Ira Vijandre, who was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement a year ago as of yesterday. In a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin and ICE Acting Director David Venturella, the Members pressed for answers regarding Ya’akub’s unconstitutional arrest and prolonged detention after a federal judge allowed his habeas challenge to proceed. Ya’akub, a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipient, has lived in the U.S. since he was 14 years old. He spent a decade working for American Airlines as a senior safety specialist and was recognized for supporting grieving families after a helicopter crashed into a plane in Washington, D.C. Despite having no criminal record and not being charged with any crime, he was targeted and arrested at gun point for speaking out against Israel’s genocide in Gaza and for “liking” a social media post with Quranic verses–both of which are protected by the First Amendment. “The administration’s stated basis for [Ya’akub’s] detention has been inconsistent and appears to rely substantially on his speech and social media activity,” the Members wrote. “DHS has sought to justify his detention by citing his social media commentary regarding the prosecutions of the Holy Land Foundation Five, his criticism of the treatment of Guantanamo detainees, his advocacy for Palestine, and his engagement with religious Islamic content, including ‘liking’ Instagram posts containing Quranic verses. We are deeply concerned that constitutionally protected political and religious expression is being used as a basis for his continued detention or deportation.” The letter renews concerns and questions from a letter Rep. Green sent in June. Rep. Tlaib also spoke on the House floor urging for Ya’akub’s release in August. “We are also concerned by reports, previously flagged in Congressman Green’s June letter, that the FBI approached Mr. Vijandre in November 2023 seeking his cooperation as a confidential informant and that he declined,” the Members continued in their letter. “His DACA status, renewed as recently as May 2024 through May 2026, was subsequently revoked. The proximity and sequence of these events—an FBI approach he declined, followed by a DACA termination and detention grounded largely in the government’s characterization of his religious and political speech—continue to raise serious questions about possible retaliation that Congress has not yet received satisfactory answers to.” The letter, led by Reps. Tlaib and Green, was signed by 21 other Members of Congress: Greg Casar (TX–35), Judy Chu (CA-28), Maxwell Frost (FL-10), Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04), Sylvia Garcia (TX-29), Adelita Grijalva (AZ-07), Jonathan Jackson (IL-01), Henry C. “Hank” Johnson, Jr. (GA-04), Ro Khanna (CA-17), Raja Krishnamoorthi (IL-08), Summer Lee (PA-12), Analilia Mejia (NJ-11), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14), Ilhan Omar (MN-05), Mark Pocan (WI-02), Ayanna Pressley (MA-07), Delia Ramirez (IL-03), Emily Randall (WA-06), Lateefah Simon (CA-12), Nydia Velázquez (NY-07), Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12). Free Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi. They’ve been held in inhumane conditions without medical attention, and both have reported significant eye damage. No one should be treated this way. I stand with the thousands of protestors marching in Pakistan demanding their release. The people of Pakistan deserve free and fair elections.

WASHINGTON — U.S. Reps. Rashida Tlaib (MI-12) and Ayanna Pressley (MA-07), and Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), member of the Environment and Public Works Committee, today announced the reintroduction of the Fossil Free Finance Act. The legislation would require banks to adopt emission transition plans to reduce financial sector emissions and deforestation risks. Under this legislation, large bank holding companies would be required to implement plans to reduce financial sector emissions 50 percent by 2035 and reach zero financial sector emissions by 2050. Additionally, it would require banks to discontinue financing for new or expanded fossil fuel projects within 60 days of enactment, immediately discontinue thermal coal financing and facilitation, and eliminate facilitation of deforestation risk commodities. Despite climate-driven wildfires, floods, and other disasters continuing to devastate regions across the country, banks continue to invest in contributing fossil fuel projects. Plans created from this legislation will help the financial sector align with science-based projections for emissions. “Our financial institutions and banks are funding the pollution of our air and water that make us sicker. They choose to invest billions of dollars in dirty fossil fuel projects,” said Rep. Tlaib. “Instead of acting to protect us, the Federal Reserve allowed these banks to finance the destruction of our planet and our health. I’m taking action with Senator Markey and Congresswoman Pressley to require the Federal Reserve to finally do something and address the dangers of our climate crisis.” “Our economy and global financial systems have a codependent relationship with the fossil fuel industry. We cannot wait for big banks to address the very climate crisis they are financing if we are serious about reducing greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation. It’s like giving an arsonist a hose for one hand while they hold a gas can in the other,” said Senator Markey. “The Fossil Free Finance Act would require our financial institutions, including banks, to protect Americans’ savings, investments, and our economy by addressing the threats posed by climate change. We need to put the planet over profit and get fossil fuels out of our finances.” “We should be using every tool available to protect our planet, our people, and our economy, and one way we can do that is by stopping giant banks from financing fossil fuel projects,” said Rep. Pressley. “Our Fossil Free Finance Act would help confront the climate crisis by stopping financial institutions, including our nation’s largest banks, from providing trillions in fossil fuel financing and deepening the health inequities and harms that already plague our communities. I’m grateful to Senator Markey and Congresswoman Tlaib for their ongoing partnership on this bill to take urgent action to help prevent a massive, climate-induced economic collapse.” “Major US banks’ ongoing finance for fossil fuel expansion is driving worsening climate change and putting the entire financial system and public at risk,” said Alex Martin, Climate Finance Policy Director at Americans for Financial Reform. “The Fossil Free Finance Act would recognize the role that fossil fuel finance plays in driving climate-related financial risk, and require banks to develop climate action plans that address those risks, creating a critical safeguard for the public and the financial system.” “While financial policymakers around the world actively work to decarbonize their economies, U.S. policymakers have fallen behind, leaving our financial system exposed to the impacts of climate change,” said David Arkush, Director of Public Citizen’s Climate Program. “Financial institutions continue to finance, invest, and underwrite unnecessary projects—creating systemic risks that can reverberate across the economy. Rather than continuing to create risks for the financial system, large and systemically important financial institutions should be required to reduce their financed and facilitated emissions in line with science-driven targets. Neither Congress nor the Federal Reserve should wait for a financial crisis to address climate-related financial risk.” The Fossil Free Finance Act of 2026 would address climate-related threats to financial stability and help align the financial sector with science-based emissions targets by redefining financial sector emissions, mandating bank holding companies with at least $50 billion in assets to align with science-based emissions targets, and requiring the Federal Reserve to report to Congress on financial sector emissions, commitments by covered institutions, progress toward emissions targets, regulatory gaps, data challenges, and equitable transition needs. The Fossil Free Finance Act of 2026 is cosponsored by Senators Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.). The legislation is endorsed by Public Citizen and Americans for Financial Reform. Senator Markey, and Reps. Tlaib, Pressley, and former Rep. Mondaire Jones (NY-17) first introduced the Fossil Free Finance Act during the 117th Congress in September 2021. Senator Markey first reintroduced the legislation with Senator Merkley in March 2023.
