Nation’s Largest Law Enforcement Organization Endorses Figures’ Bill to Cover College and Trade School Costs for the Children of Police Officers

MONTGOMERY – Today, Congressman Shomari C. Figures announced that the National Fraternal Order of Police – the nation’s largest organization of sworn law enforcement officers – has endorsed his bipartisan bill, the Public Service Educational Assistance Act, to cover the cost of college and job training for the children of law enforcement officers, other first responders, educators, and social workers. “Every day, our police officers put their lives on the line to keep our streets and communities safe,” said Figures. “They and their families make tremendous sacrifices for us, and we should be there to give back to them in any way that we can. That’s why I introduced this bipartisan bill to recognize the vital work of our law enforcement officers by investing in their families' future.” “Public servants are the backbone of America, serving in vital roles that ensure the safety and well-being of their communities every day. As law enforcement in America faces a critical recruitment and retention crisis, and as postsecondary education becomes more expensive and crucial in our modern world, it is vital that the Federal government ensures that our public servants have the necessary funding and opportunities to receive postsecondary education,” said Patrick Yoes, National President of the National Fraternal Order of Police. “On behalf of the more than 382,000 members of the Fraternal Order of Police, thank you both for your leadership on this important issue.” Figures’ bill establishes a federal education assistance program covering the full cost of postsecondary education and training opportunities – including those enrolled in trade schools and vocational programs – for the dependents of educators, first responders, and social workers who have completed at least 20 years of qualifying service. Congressman Figures is joined in introducing this legislation by Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Representatives Jahana Hayes (CT-05) and Mike Ezell (MS-04). In addition to the National Fraternal Order of Police, this bill is also endorsed by the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, the National Association of Social Workers, the International Association of Fire Fighters, the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians, and the Major Cities Chiefs Association. Figures, Booker, Hayes, Ezell to Introduce Bipartisan Bill to Cover College and Trade School Costs for Families of America’s First Responders, Teachers, and Social Workers

WASHINGTON — Today, Rep. Shomari C. Figures (AL-02), Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), Rep. Jahana Hayes (CT-05), and Rep. Mike Ezell (MS-04) will introduce the bipartisan Public Service Educational Assistance Act, a bill to support the families of critical public service employees by covering the full cost of higher education and training opportunities for the dependents of educators, first responders, and social workers. "Educators, first responders, and social workers show up for us in our classrooms, our emergencies, and our hardest moments, year after year," said Booker. "Their families carry that sacrifice too, often quietly, through long hours and stretched budgets. After 20 years of service, the least we can do is make sure their kids can go to college without drowning in debt." “Teachers, social workers, and first responders dedicate their lives in service to our communities, oftentimes unable to provide opportunities they fight so hard for others to enjoy, to their own children,” said Hayes. “I am pleased to introduce the Public Service Educational Assistance Act alongside Congressman Figures to honor the work of public servants and make it easier for their own families to pursue higher education." “As someone who spent more than four decades in law enforcement, I know the sacrifices that come with a career dedicated to serving your community—not just for the individual wearing the badge, but for their entire family,” said Ezell. “The Public Service Educational Assistance Act recognizes that commitment by helping provide educational opportunities for the children of those who have devoted decades of their lives to public service. I’m proud to help introduce this legislation to support the families of our law enforcement officers, first responders, educators, and others who dedicate their careers to serving their neighbors.” This legislation establishes a federal education assistance program covering the full cost of postsecondary education and training opportunities – including those enrolled in trade schools and vocational programs – for the dependents of educators, first responders, and social workers who have completed at least 20 years of qualifying service. This bill is endorsed by the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, the National Association of Social Workers, the International Association of Fire Fighters, and the Major Cities Chiefs Association.

Communities all across my district have serious water infrastructure needs, and federal funding is essential to making these improvements a reality. That’s why I worked so hard to get authorization for $50 million for local projects into this year’s Water Resources Development Act (WRDA), and I'm happy to see it pass the House!

House Passes Figures’ Bipartisan Bill to Rename Post Office Honoring Tuskegee Airmen

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Shomari C. Figures’ bipartisan bill to rename a post office located in Tuskegee after the Tuskegee Airmen passed the U.S. House of Representatives by a voice vote. The Tuskegee Airmen were composed of African American pilots and support personnel who trained at Moton Field and Tuskegee Army Airfield and fought bravely during World War II, making them the first African American military aviators in our Armed Forces. They not only defended our nation and the freedom of those abroad but also overcame racial barriers at home trailblazing a path for generations of future service members and military leaders.

63 years ago today, the lives of 4 young Black girls - Carole Robertson, Denise McNair, Addie Mae Collins, and Cynthia Wesley - were cut short far too soon in the horrific 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham. Today, we remember and honor them, as well as Sarah Collins Rudolph, who suffered permanent injuries in the attack. As painful of a chapter as this was for Alabama and this nation, as some of our history is, the deaths of these four little girls cannot ever be forgotten.

I know that across Alabama, parents are struggling to keep up with the cost of their children’s extracurricular activities, which can cost thousands of dollars each year. To address this issue, I introduced a bill that would give parents a tax break of up to $5,000 a year. Read more below! https://t.co/1cKuUrE1c3
