The arc of history is long, and we’re all a part of it. In 1873, Susan B. Anthony first wrote the Senate advocating for women to have the right to vote. 100 years later, in 1973, the head of U.S. House staff wrote a letter reluctantly allowing female staff to wear pants at work (swipe to see — it’s a doozy). The women's movement in America has made significant progress, and there is much more to do.

Pete Hegseth’s plan to livestream Nidal Hasan’s execution will do nothing to honor the Americans killed at Fort Hood. This has never happened before in America, and for good reason. An on-camera execution risks making Hasan a martyr and handing America’s enemies propaganda they can use for decades. The families of the slain deserve better, and Hegseth should stop the public airing of this event.

When it comes to finding a backbone from my Republican colleagues, we gotta crawl, walk, run. But we are still a ways from that. Growing a spine takes a long time. https://t.co/1zTs11J5mp

Michigan needs to keep the streak of having an Attorney General who is willing and able to fight back against this administration. I know that @EliNSavit will do just that. https://t.co/RjI6S4I1ww

After Trump's first term, we talked about setting up a task force to do just this. Unfortunately, too many leaders on both sides of the aisle believed that the Trump era was behind us and not worth the heavy lift of changing laws to protect the future. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. So after we win an election, we need to deliver real results, hold signature cases accountable, and Trump-proof the government going forward.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. Jim Bibbs. Mr. Bibbs was a trailblazer famous for being named the first Black head coach at @michiganstateu, and the first Black head track and field coach in Big Ten history. In 2021, I had the honor of recognizing him on the floor of the U.S. House, and putting his life’s achievements in the Congressional Record. Those who knew Mr. Bibbs know his legacy is more than his many titles. He was distinguished by the kindness he showed to those around him and the seeds of confidence he planted in his student-athletes over the course of his life. Mr. Bibbs also continued serving the Lansing community by volunteering with East Lansing High School athletes. He will be greatly missed by the entire Spartan community. https://t.co/WZWr3oJsnu

I will forever feel, as a national security person by training, that the existential issue threatening the United States is not coming from abroad. It is coming from the deep threat to the middle class and the American dream. It’s the reason we have Trump, but it spans beyond him.

It’s hard to believe that President Trump started another war in the Middle East, got us stuck, and now is forced to buy Russian oil from Putin, aiding and abetting the war Putin started in Ukraine, in which he's now stuck. Trump has always weirdly admired Putin, and now they share the same hubris that got them into failing and expensive wars. https://t.co/mRs30fgMxe

The saying goes that if you want a friend in politics, get a dog. I count myself lucky that I've found real friends in this work. Good, decent people like @SpanbergerforVA. She helps me recharge my batteries, and she understands why we need to stay focused on the mission of protecting our country.

I think the lessons from how both countries came out of authoritarian government, and the different ways they did it, were really important. There’s a playbook for these authoritarians, but there’s also a playbook to get out of it. I saw in real time in Hungary — you can do all the right things and win elections, and then you have to actually deliver for people. So I want folks here, particularly Democrats, thinking about: what is the plan? And how do you actually deliver for people once you’ve won an election in a way that doesn’t just send you pendulum swinging back four years later?

What we know here in the U.S. is that a new coalition is needed. No litmus testing people out of a movement for change. The real divide is between those who believe in President Trump's vision of America and those who believe that in America our spirit still lives, and that a new generation of leaders can and must renew it.

Thank you to the @washoedems for the invite to speak at the Power the Blue Wave dinner in Reno last week. Washoe County is as purple as it gets, and that felt right at home for a Senator from Michigan. Democrats here are fired up to elect @AaronDFordNV to flip Nevada's Governor from red to blue, @nicole4nevada for Attorney General, and Teresa Benitez-Thompson in #NV02. We need a new generation of leaders, with big and bold ideas, who are going to fight to reclaim our government for the middle class. Let's go win!

.@MikeRogersForMI and President Donald Trump see elected office not as a calling to serve the American people, but as a means to further their own narrow self-interests. And this repeated, Islamophobic rhetoric toward @AbdulElSayed only shows how low they are willing to go to achieve power and that they are all out of ideas to make your life better and to lower your costs. It’s the worst kind of politics and Michiganders will reject it come November 3.

Don Jr., the president’s son, had his wedding party paid for by a close friend of Vladimir Putin, a big Russian oligarch businessman. When a foreigner, particularly someone close to a senior leader in another country, pays for things for the President’s son, there’s an expectation that you owe them something in return. It’s not just about someone paying for your wedding. It’s about the expectation of insider information, privileged information, or access. That’s why there’s a clear red line not to do it.

The Supreme Court used to be the backstop, generally making objective legal decisions. We can't count on that anymore. They are enabling President Trump's worst impulses, and eroding the confidence the American people have in their government. Now is the time for real reform to the Supreme Court.

Whether it is Warren, Michigan or Washoe County, NV, the most important thing people can do right now to protect democracy is stay vigilant and keep watch on President Trump's antics leading up to the midterms. He is being very clear on how he wants to interfere in our elections if he loses, and we cannot allow that to happen.

Michigan lost a quiet giant this week. Margaret Hamilton, who grew up in the Upper Peninsula and graduated from Hancock High School, went on to lead the team that wrote the onboard flight software that put Apollo 11 on the moon. When the guidance computer was overwhelmed in the final seconds of descent, the system she and her team built kept the landing on track. In 2016, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and across her life she showed generations of women and girls that they belong in science and technology. From the shores of Lake Superior to the surface of the moon, Margaret Hamilton expanded what we believe is possible. Our thoughts are with her family and all who loved her. May she rest in peace. https://t.co/ZwGyLdXTbD

The President is already using every tool at his disposal to intervene in our elections this November. And the authoritarian playbook is very clear. When you're at risk of losing, you either make up a threat that only you can protect the American people from or find a way for federal law enforcement or the military to seize ballots or voting machines. If you hear in the next few days that there is a new security threat that you've never heard of that requires federal law enforcement or the military, an alarm bell should go off in your brain. Do not let him get away with that.

Nidal Hasan's crimes at Fort Hood were horrific. His actions destroyed families and he deserves no sympathy. But Pete Hegseth's decision to livestream his execution is not about Mr. Hasan — it's all about all of us. This has never happened before in America, and for good reason — it's the kind of thing we got used to seeing from the Taliban or ISIS, not the U.S. military. Just as terrorist groups used on-camera executions as propaganda for their cause, this video will be used in recruitment videos by America's enemies for decades to come. It also gives Hasan exactly what he likely wanted when he walked onto Ft. Hood and started shooting. Now, an on-camera death will make him a martyr and cause célèbre enshrined in history. This is likely the very last thing I imagine the families of the slain would want. Someone with more sense than Pete Hegseth, who has lost all bearings of what it means to lead, should step in and stop the public airing of this event. https://t.co/HXA9Nc86EP

The TV ads that President Trump was running during football games were airing across the country, and there are serious questions about the use of taxpayer dollars to pay for them. We’ve relied on norms and traditions for years to keep leaders in check, but now that those norms have been tested and broken, it’s clear we need stronger laws in place.
