I think people don't really always think about this, but AI companies are at risk of creating a massive financial bubble and have yet to prove they can make the profits to back it up. We need to be prepared for what happens if it pops. Americans should not be forced to pay the price for their risky bets with a taxpayer-funded bailout.

The President and Republicans are betting the entire farm hoping AI will pan out, but we have yet to see that’s realistically going to happen.

TRUMP: You have to vote for Michele Tafoya, who’s a very respected person. While we’re at it, I should say it. She’s very respected. It’s hard to win because they cheat on their elections too. You know, I thought I won Minnesota three times https://t.co/EFbTuThQjK

Really telling that Trump endorsed Michele Tafoya and denied election results in the same breath. He's a complete autocrat who craves nothing but power and loyalty, and he knows Tafoya will give it to him.

On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, I want to say Pidamayaye and Miigwech to Tribal Nations and Native communities in Minnesota and beyond for your partnership and friendship over the years. Honoring your sovereignty and upholding our government-to-government relationships is central to my responsibilities as Senator, and I look forward to standing with you long into the future.

I’m outraged by this attack on Representative Omar. Trump and his DOJ have a bizarre obsession with tearing down Minnesota, our leaders and our communities. This latest action, even as voting has already started in Minnesota, is a transparent attempt to interfere in our elections. This is their corrupt playbook: Use all the powers of the federal government to attack our leaders. Deploy an out of control, violent federal police force to invade our communities and kill and injure Minnesotans. Launch baseless and hateful attacks on the Somali community. And feed Trump’s longstanding obsession with Representative Omar. Minnesota won’t stand for it.

Data centers epitomize the power Big Tech has over communities. People point to these buildings as proof that Big Tech plays by a different set of rules, and get pissed that data centers are built over the objections of the people who live around them (often with taxpayer $) https://t.co/ycdoWd9C3G

And to rub salt in the wound, these tech companies are forcing local officials on city councils or county boards to sign NDA’s so they can’t even tell their own constituents what’s going on. No wonder Minnesotans don’t trust these guys.

Today we mark three years since the horrific Hamas terrorist attack on Israelis. We remember the children, parents, and grandparents who will never see their loved ones again, and those who were rescued but will be forever injured by what they endured. Violence has plagued the region ever since that day. Innocent civilians needlessly killed and millions displaced without food, shelter, water or medicine. Satellite images of a devastated Gaza do not do justice to the humanitarian catastrophe. This war must end, with a durable two-state solution and lasting peace for both Palestinians and Israelis.

These companies were going to build most of these data centers regardless of the tax incentives, so we should question the fiscal rationale of these incentives. It also sounds ripe for corruption, considering these companies routinely donate millions to the President’s campaigns.

Reports are swirling around that tech companies are cashing in on corporate tax breaks from the Big Beautiful Bill to bankroll massive data centers. So I am requesting Congress’s official tax estimators provide a full report on just how much money Republicans shelled out to these corporations.

U.S. Senator Tina Smith’s Measures to Simplify, Update Tax Filings for Farmers and Consumers Passes Senate

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Tina Smith (D-MN) successfully included two measures to help Minnesotans navigate their taxes in legislation that passed the Senate. Sen. Smith’s first measure would adjust the deadline for farmers to file their taxes to align with when most other Minnesotans would file theirs, while her second would require the IRS to track how often they make taxpayers re-submit the same paperwork due to bureaucratic errors. The measures were included in the Taxpayer Assistance and Service Act that passed the Senate unanimously. “Nobody enjoys filing their taxes, but what makes it even worse is how cumbersome and illogical our tax system is, particular for farmers,” said Sen. Smith. “These measures are simple, common-sense solutions. Farmers should get just as much time to prepare their tax filings as everyone else, and the IRS needs to keep track of how often it makes taxpayers submit the same document over and over again.” The Farm Tax Filing Deadline amendment will give farmers and fishers until Tax Day, April 15, to file their taxes without penalty. Under current law, farmers and fishers must file and pay estimated taxes by March 1 to avoid penalties. Meanwhile, most other taxpayers have until April 15 to file their taxes without penalty. The current earlier deadline left farmers and fishers scrambling to get all the paperwork done in time while everyone else gets an extra month and a half. The Reporting on Document Management to Avoid Duplicative Requests to Constituents amendment that requires the IRS to track how many documents the agency asks taxpayers to re-submit, even though there was nothing wrong with the documents previously submitted. This amendment won’t cost the government any extra money and will require the IRS to report how many copies of documents it requests from a single taxpayer. This information will then be presented annually to Congress for the next five years to track the progress or lack-there-of. The Taxpayer Assistance and Service Act (TAS) passed the Senate unanimously on September 30 and now heads to the House of Representatives. The TAS Act includes more than 60 bipartisan reforms to improve the taxpayer experience, including recommendations from the National Taxpayer Advocate and Finance Committee members on both sides of the aisle. ###

U.S. Senator Tina Smith’s Legislation to Combat Lyme Disease & Other Tick-Borne Diseases Becomes Law

Most recent data shows Minnesota recorded 3,551 cases in 2024 alone, a rate that has likely increased in recent years WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tina Smith’s (D-MN) bipartisan bill to expand research, testing and treatment for Lyme and other tick-borne diseases has been signed into law by the President. The Kay Hagan Tick Reauthorization Act passed the U.S. Senate in August, passed the U.S. House of Representatives in mid-September. “The number of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses has been rising at an alarming rate. This law will step up regional efforts at researching, testing and treating Lyme and other tick-borne diseases. We must cut down on tick-borne illnesses for the sake of Americans’ health and well-being,” said Sen. Smith. “This law will save lives, especially in states like Minnesota, where tick populations have been rising.” Over the past two decades, Minnesota has experienced a significant rise in tick-borne diseases. According to the Minnesota Department of Health, Lyme disease remains the state’s most reported tick-borne illness, with 3,551 probable cases reported in 2024. In the same year, Minnesota also reported hundreds of cases of other tickborne diseases: 627 cases of anaplasmosis, 89 cases of babesiosis and 14 cases of Powassan virus disease. The bill, co-led by Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), was named in honor of former Sen. Kay Hagan (D-NC), who passed away on October 28, 2019, due to complications from the tick-borne Powassan virus. Using a three-pronged approach, The Kay Hagan Tick Reauthorization Act will: Continue implementation and updates of the Department of Health and Human Services’ National Public Health Strategy to Prevent and Control Vector-Borne Diseases in People. This will support ongoing federal efforts to advance research, improve diagnostics and strengthen coordination on vector-borne diseases. Reauthorize the Regional Centers of Excellence in Vector-Borne Disease for five years. These centers support critical research, surveillance and public health efforts to address tick-borne diseases and other vector-borne threats. Reauthorize CDC grants to state health departments to strengthen vector-borne disease prevention and response efforts. These grants will support surveillance, early detection and diagnosis, treatment efforts, public education, and partnerships to address Lyme disease and other vector-borne diseases. ###
