John Laird, a Democrat, has served as California State Senator for District 17 since December 7, 2020. He previously represented the 27th District in the California State Assembly from 2002 to 2008, covering parts of Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, and Monterey counties, and served as Secretary of the California Natural Resources Agency from 2011 to 2019. In 1983 he became mayor of Santa Cruz, one of the first openly gay mayors in the United States, and he and Mark Leno were among the first two openly gay men to serve in the California Legislature.
