Jill Duson is a Democratic member of the Maine State Senate representing District 27, having taken office December 7, 2022, when she became the first Black woman to serve as a state senator in Maine's history. Born in 1953 in Chester, she earned a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School and has worked as a lobbyist. Before her Senate election, Duson served on the Portland School Board and the Portland City Council beginning in 2001, and in 2004 she became the first African-American mayor of Portland and the first African-American woman mayor in Maine, chosen by fellow council members under the city's council-manager system.… Read more
