Referred to the Committee on Education and the Workforce, and in addition to the Committee on Armed Services, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
This bill directs the Secretary of Education to count months when active duty service members have federal student loans in deferment toward their Public Service Loan Forgiveness eligibility, treating those deferred months as if payments were made. The legislation affects military service members and Department of Defense civilian employees who have federal student loans and may qualify for the loan forgiveness program. Within one year of enactment, the Secretaries of Defense and Education must conduct data matching to identify eligible service members and automatically certify their qualifying employment periods and payments without requiring individuals to submit additional paperwork. The bill also requires these two agencies to jointly report to Congress within one year on implementation progress and recommendations for improving how the military and defense personnel are treated under the public service loan forgiveness program.
