The Race
Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA) is running for a seventh term, and the only suspense in Virginia's 8th U.S. House District arrives well before November. Five Democrats are running in the primary Tuesday, Aug. 4: Beyer, Lorena Bruner, Michael Duffin, Adam Dunigan and Mo Seifeldein. Three of the challengers lost or left federal jobs during the Trump administration's cuts, in a district where roughly 76,000 federal employees live, and they have built their campaigns around that. The Republican primary was canceled, and Tony Sabio advanced unopposed.
The baseline here is lopsided. Beyer took 71.5% in 2024, or 274,593 of 383,915 votes cast, and the seat has not been close in years.
Ratings
All three major raters have this one in their least competitive tier. Cook Political Report and Inside Elections both call it Solid Democratic. Sabato's Crystal Ball rates it Safe Democratic, a different label for the same verdict.
Prediction Markets
Traders are betting the same direction. On Polymarket, the Democratic Party contract for the VA-08 seat sits at 94% and the Republican contract at 6% as of 2:00 p.m. ET, Tuesday, July 28. Buying Yes on both sides would cost 94 cents and 7 cents, or 101 cents total, which is normal. That gap between what buyers and sellers will accept is the cost of doing business in a thin market ($15,292 in total), not a math error, and it means these prices are close cousins of probabilities rather than the thing itself.
The separate Polymarket VA-08 Democratic primary market has traded roughly $1,100 across the whole field. In that market, Beyer is priced at 96%, with Seifeldein next at 3%.
Experts vs. Markets
The raters say the seat is not competitive, and the money agrees. What's interesting is that the market is a touch less emphatic than the ratings are. A 94% price implies about a one in 16 chance of a Republican pickup, which is a real, if small, number. Cook, Inside Elections, and Sabato's are effectively saying zero. Polymarket's own summary text describes that race as 'tightly contested'; its prices say otherwise.
