Who's In the Race
It's looking like Democrats are poised to take Virginia's 8th congressional seat on Nov. 3. when Democratic incumbent Don Beyer and Republican Tony Sabio will face each other in the general election.
What They Stand For
Beyer supports expanding access to affordable health care and views the Affordable Care Act as an important step toward that goal. He describes climate change as an existential crisis and opposes continuing to emit pollutants without accounting for their economic costs, according to his official House issues page. Beyer also supports stronger measures to reduce gun violence, humane and effective immigration policies that recognize the country's immigrant heritage, and abortion access, including the ability to decide whether and when to have a child.
Sabio, on his campaign website, says he advocates protecting constitutional freedoms, improving public safety, and supporting veterans. He also describes border crossings as an unchecked national-security concern.
Race Outlook: Ratings and Betting Markets
Cook Political Report, Sabato's Crystal Ball and Inside Elections each rated the seat "Solid Democratic," as of late September and early October.
On Kalshi, the prediction market gave Democrats a 93.75% chance of winning the seat as of Oct. 5, 2026, with Republicans at 6.25%. That market had seen $13,980 in trading volume.
Beyer won the 2022 general election with 73.5% of the vote, and won again in 2024 with 71.5%.
